G5 Getting Slowed

Every time I go to make layered adjustments with overwritten text or matted material, my G5 gets the colored spinning wheel and the arrow goes white to render and needs to process for a while before the changes take effect. This happens even if I make a simple change in scale or position and is an exceptionally long render that should be done RT. Any idea of what is going on to cause this and how to fix this pestering problem?

Re: G5 Getting Slowed

is your energy saving set to reduced? if it is, set it to automatic or highest.

if not, try repairing permissions by going into Applications/utilities/disk utility, and click repair permissions on your primary hdd.

Re: G5 Getting Slowed

Just wondering what your setup is? Besides that it is a G5. Single or dual processor, as well as how much ram, and are you running other apps at the same time.

Do you know how much memory is set aside for realtime? This should be adjusted under Final Cut Pro>System Settings

Even though stuff is said to be realtime, the computer must still cache that video somewhere. It does this using ram. So when you make a small adjustment, if this small adjustment affects video that is layered it must still do some processing, and this is usually what is happening. On my old G4/400 laptop, when i would do something that was "realtime" it would actually popup with a status bar, because it took it a while to process all of the cache files for the changes. But of course, i do a lot of compositing in FCP so even realtime stuff can take a moment to process. But my Dual G5/2Ghz does wonderful with it all now.

Let us know your specs though. If anything, its always good to have more ram. I've got 1gig now and need another soon.

Later,
Hope that helps explain it a little.

Michael also had a good point with the energy saver settings. I always have my processors set to high.
