G4 Powerbook OS X 10.4 - Very Slow Render / Export Time - Normal?

I have a G4 Powerbook running OS X 14.4, 2GB Ram, 1.5 Ghz processor. When rendering or exporting it takes soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long. It's been like this for a while, taking at times 12+ hours to encord an mpeg2 file for a dvd and a few minutes to render clips with filters and transitions. What can I do or check??

Pretty old machine- I'm not surprised. If you want faster render times it's time to pony up for newer hardware. Even a new iMac would likely blow it away.

that's too long
I have 1.67 GHZ
2GB Ram
Running 10.4.1

I used to get crazy times like that before I fixed a few problems. Not likely that what - a short ? a music video? should take that long to render / export. Unless maybe you are using all kinds of crazy 3rd party filters and motion and doing uncompressed type stuff. That's like G3 rendering the 1st Mac version of Magic Bullet long. :cheesy:

One of the reasons I heard for the long render times was mismatched versions and remnants of FCP and Compressor. So I did a clean install and that helped.

The other reason - bad logic board which is common for these overheating little machines.

Also check your about this mac / more info / diagnostics and see if it says that either of your ram slots failed to load
and
about this mac / more info / memory to make sure both are showing up ... another common problem for the G4' laptops.
