My daughter has talked her grandparents into getting her a G4 notebook for her birthday (where were grandparents like that when i was growing up) Since she will use the machine at school and home she needs the laptop, howver i guess they do not make a G5 yet. my question is will FCP express run well enough on the G4. I know she will get the full gig of ram but ither than is she good? Any other specification i should suggest to her?

im using FCE on an iMac 800mhz, and it runs alright. Sure its no dual G5, but it manages. The powerbook should run it quite well.

Thanks Ski. That is helpful. By the way I used to live in Salt lake at the foot of Little Cottonwood, or Big Cottonwood. can neve remember which, the one with Alta. Loved SLC Park City area. Wish i were still there sometimes.

Hey Mister Park City SkiUtha,

What G4 is your doughter gettin? A Powerbook or I book?
The iBook works but if you want to edit more then some vacation or homeviedeos I suggest the Powerbook, because it has better graphic card with 64mb ram on it compared to 32 on the iBook. You can also order with 128 mb.
Anyway, both notebooks work just fine with FCX.

she is getting the powerbook. She goes to a arts school and her talent is TV/film production so she will need all the beef she can get. Of course i cant wait for her to get it so Dad can test it out for her. Getting the full 128 woudl probably be a good idea. I think she is getting the 15 inch also.

If you can swing it I'd suggest get as much RAM as possible. 500MB or more if the machine will be used hard, especially for editing. If she might run Motion at some point this becomes even more critical. Check the specs for Motion.

I think they were talking about RAM on the graphics card.

Motion is way too spec-heavy. Also, by FCP Express I assume you mean Final Cut Express and one problem is that it doesn't do 24p. If she's using a dvx or xl2, that's an issue.

Also, wait for NAB!
