Do you mean recording the shotgun to one channel on the camera while using the wireless on the other or do you mean using the wireless as a radio link in lieu of a cable to send the shotgun back to the camera? Actually you can do either one but the details of the setup will obviously differ.

recording the shotgun into one channel while using the wireless on the other. this would involve careful mixing of two raw signals which i really dont see how this could work.

but someone enlighten me....

This will work fine. Just make sure you have your phantom power switches set properly. On the 897, you are better off using the camera power rather than the internal battery, so the 897 would need phantom, and the G3 not.

shotgun into channel 1, set for mic input on front of camera, inside LCD set mic input to channel 1, turn +48v power on for channel 1
wireless into channel 2, set it to either mic or line on front of camera; depending on what your AF OUT is set at on RX, set mic input to channel 2

Make sure you DO NOT mix the signals. The arrival time of the sound at the shotgun will be slightly different from the arrical at the lac capsule. Record them both, certainly. But use only one or the other, don't try to blend them together.

thanks steve. i m recording to the P2 card so they both will be recorded there. i may have to get another recording device.

Fine that they be recorded there, just make sure you don't mix the tracks in the camera or in post. Keep the 'gun on one track and the lav the other, deciding in post which sounds better and which you'll use.
