g1 vs g2 differences

I can get a couple of g1 tx/rx combos (sk100 and ek100) cheap - how much farther behind are they from the current g2 series. The only big downsides are no backlit display (fine with me), and they use 9v batteries.

Was there any big quality difference in these and the g2s? I can save a few hundred dollars if I pick these up or I'll just get the g2s if theres a big difference. Just didnt see the need in spending the extra money if I didnt have to.

Are the G1s those big old things that look like they were used in the former soviet union, or on the Merv Griffin show?

I can tell you that *for the money* the G2s rock! I've used them on many broadcast shoots with no problems---- The Rachel Ray Show, The Dr. Keith Ablow Show, The History Channel, A&E, etc. In fact, in August The History Channel will be a airing a one hour doc. on the '68 DNC convention in Chicago. Check out the live interviews with Bill Kurtis and the rest of the interviewees from Chicago----- All G2s with Tram TR-50 lavs.

Yeah yeah they look to be a tad bigger and not as sleek as the g2's, just thought since they are cheaper than I can get g2's for, why not save a buck if the quality is the same. I've got a client that has their own equipment that we shoot for and they have a few g2's and I must say they are fantastic for the price. Glad to hear they've worked on some high profile shows. The DNC show sounds interesting - I'll be sure to watch it!

Sound-wise they aren't too far off. They use 9V instead of AA (over time you should take into account the difference in cost between AA and 9V - as in the overall cost of ownership). And, they have a feature which I much prefer over the G2's - you can unscrew the antenna and protect it well.

I have the original version and it works fine. You need to get the lithium rechargeable 9v batteries from trew though and that adds to the cost by about $80. You may be better off new so you can use nimh aa rechargables. BTW the me 2 mic that comes with that system does not sound very good, so plan on getting a countryman emw, b6 or sanken cos11 to replace it (wired for g2).
