G-Raid or G-Sata??

I understand G..whatever or Seagate are pretty good.
I am leaning with G-Technology but they have a few drives.
Which is the best to work with the HVX200?
What are the major differences and Pros/Cons of -Raid / -Sata

Concerns:
Speed for live capturing
Secure transfer for P2 offlaod through laptop.

Thanks.

BTW
I ordered Barry's book Saturday...got it Monday :) Very Quick. Thanks Barry!

Maxtor and Seagate (now the same company) both have horrible reputations. I've personally had 2 Maxtor drives crash on me for no reason - one stopped spinning, in the other the reader head broke and split the disks in half. Seagate drives are also plagued with problems.

I have had pretty good luck with Seagate.

I had 3 Western Digital drives die on me in one month, i also had 2 DOA Western Digital drives about a year ago..

Same with 2 maxtors over a 2 year period but i havent lost any seagates.

morten and webdog,
Thanks for the feedback.
I was already going with G-Technology but I need to know which one of there drives would be applicable to my needs.
They have:
G-Speed
G-Raid2
G-Raid mini
G-Raid Pro
G-Sata
G-Drive
G-Drive Q
G-Drive -mini

I've kind of narrowed it down from my best assement to G-Raid or G-Sata, thus given the name of this thread. But i don't know which to choose?? Maybe even G-Raid mini

Anyone else on the forum have experience with either?? or any recommendations???

Thanks.

...knowing where to buy one in New York (in person) for a reasonable price would also be helpful

I was hoping someone else would answer, because I'm not familiar with these particular products or the requirements of the HVX200, but I used to be Group Leader for filesystems at a real-time operating system company (QNX -- I was chief architect of the QNX4 OS and the designer of the filesystem as well as the designer/author of the fault tolerante filesystem that VISA uses), so I generally know about storage technology.

Both G-RAID2 and G-SATA support up to 2 drives in a RAID 0 (striped) configuration for maximum throughput. Either should be able to handle the data requirements you have with capacity to spare.

The key difference between them that I can see is that the G-SATA unit uses a eSATA interface to the host computer. The G-RAID2 unit has a FireWire400 (IEEE 1394a), FireWire800 (IEEE 1394b) and USB 2.0 interface.

The interfaces available on the G-RAID2 will probably give you more connectivity options (you don't say what your host computer is). Stay away from the USB connector though -- it won't be fast enough.

Your best speed will be obtained with the FireWire800 connection. You'll need a PCIx FireWire800 card if you don't have a port already in your computer.

BTW, I'm only a video amateur looking to learn. Next month I shoot my 2nd wedding and possibly a documentary about the Necronomicon SF convention. I just finished a 1:15 minute corporate video to promote a new product for the company I work for 9-5. I don't yet have a serious camera, but I should have a DVX100a (or b) within the next 2 weeks.

Thanks WAFlowers.
I appreciate the info.
I think I am gonna pick up a couple G-Raid2's next week.

Unfortunately, today I have to get a G-Drive for my shoot tomorrow.
Adorama is already closed, B&H only has mini's and J&R has one of these left
G-Tech G-Drive 160GB (FireWire 400 & 2.0 / 7200 RPM) $184.21 after tax.
as long as its good enough for offloading P2 cards tomorrow.

I am using a PC Laptop in the field for now, will be using the Macbook Pro when the Duel Systems express card to PC card adapter comes out.

anyone have updates on Duel Systems release date??

The G-Drive should do just fine for you, although for the long term I'd like the extra security that the fan in the G-RAID2 gives.

Glad I could help. Now, if someone could help me find an affodable camera ...
