g-raid or g-sata

I'm choosing media storage and have narrowed my list down to two possibles:

g-raid 500gb, or

g-sata 500gb.

Can anyone give me pros and cons of the two? For one thing I'm not sure why the sata is cheaper than the raid when performance looks to be better.

I'd go with the GSata, it will give you slightly faster speeds and won't use up your firewire bus. Looks like you have to buy the card and cable seperately with the Gsata, so that brings up the price.

I would check out LaCie's new SATA RAID. Cheaper, and it has hot swappable drives, which is a nice feature. It also has selectable RAID modes, and SATA II.

Everything LaCie scares me to death since my hard disk failure (and resulting trip to media recovery)

In the uk(where I am) the sata comes with the card. The one thing that may sway me is I'd like to be able to offload from the p2 straight to HDD which would rule out the sata. However if the sata is really that much better than raid I may have to just drag the laptop around as well.

I don't understand why you are comparing SATA to a raid.
SATA is a type of disk. It s faster than standard ATA / IDE and is compatible with G5's though you can get adapters for PCMCIA cards to laptops and PCI cards in G4's or for external G4 or G5. They are a better solution and more forward looking I think, but will be a hair slower if you adapt then to your firewire which is built around IDE.

Raid is an arrangement of 2 or more drives to share or mirror information. It can be done with SATA drives or IDE.
Get a SATA Raid.
But it depends what you are doing with these. Is it for capture?
Then where will the drives go after field work. If you can be SATA compatible on both ends great.

G-sata and G-raid are the product names from G-tech.

The sata can be raid also.

I would be using it to offload the p2 cards and also to edit from.

I was unsure why g-tech would be selling the gsata for cheaper than the raid if performance was better with the sata.

swings and roundabouts.

I have used LaCie products for years and have not had a single issue with them. Five different products without one problem. I'm not saying they're perfect, or that other people haven't had issues. I just wanted the thread to show a little balance.

As far the thread topic ;) , Sonnet Tech make a 4-drive enclosure (The Fusion 400 http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fusion.html) that a buddy of mine is using with FCP, and before that, in Xpro on a PC, and it performs like a champ! He currently has 1.6 TBs (4x400), while using Sonnet Tech's Tempo SATA X4P 4-Port card http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_sata_x4p.html.

He has been so happy with this enclosure, he's looking at the Fusion 400's big brother, the Fusion 500P http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fusion500p.html It has a built-in multiplier that allows the need for only one SATA host cable. (That's only one cable from the RAID to the PC/Mac.) His current "clutter" of the (4) SATAs going to his G5 isn't that bad, but I'm sure it'll look nicer with three of the cables gone. I should point out that the 500P requires a SATA card that allows multiplying.
