G-Raid Firewire Drives

Has anyone used a external G-Raid firewire drive?? I'm seriously considering the 320GB G-Raid for my next project, but I thought I would ask around and see how people like them. I have pretty much used Lacie drives up to this point, but I have to admit that I'm not all that inpressed with them. I have had a couple fail at critical moments. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: G-Raid Firewire Drives

Reset1,
I was looking to see what brand drives that G-Tech uses in their drives but I can't find a single thing and I googled the hell out of it. I've got some of the newer big disk extremes 500GB and they have reliable thus far. I believe they have western digital drives inside. Have you considered mirroring your drives?
Alot of space I know, but nice to know that the footage is backed up if one drive should fail.

Re: G-Raid Firewire Drives

Hey Caveman,
the G-Raids use two Hitatchi Deskstar 7200 rpm drives. In this case it would be two 160GB = 320GB total. I found some info on 2-pop, here is the link:

As for backup, I always keep a copy of my project files on a seperate drive. If anything goes wrong I can re-capture the media and reconnect the offline project and be right back where I started.

Re: G-Raid Firewire Drives

I'd have to say these are very high-quality drives. If you check some of the posts in this forum and others you'll find that so far it's all good. I have the 320GB and wrote a review at http://dvestore.com/products/graid.html

Charlie White also just wrote a review at http://www.dmnforums.com/cgi-bin/viewarticle.cgi?id=30850

The Hitachi drives are formally IBM Desktstar drives. I still have the three 16.8GB IBM Deskstar drives from '98 running as a RAID in a server. It's been running 24/7 since 2001. The funny thing is, I paid $500 a pop for those back in the day....

Re: G-Raid Firewire Drives

Thanks for the info Guy, and firstcinemapicture. I took a chance and started my latest project on a 320GB G-Raid and so far soo good. I have captured 5 tapes each about an hour in length while removing advanced pulldown, and the drive was solid. Even after hours of use the drive was still running cool. I like the fact that the G-Raids have a small fan in the enclosure, because we all know that heat and drives don't play well together.

Re: G-Raid Firewire Drives

Hey,
I have 2 of the G Raid's and they are great. 48 DV tapes & 48 DATS on a feature without a problem. And yes on the IBM drives, I have 10) 9 gigs in a raid running non-stop for 7 years. Not one poop. Oh darn, I said it. Well, go for the G RAIDS. Like Guy said, I paid $500 for each 9 gig and was as happy sa a pig. $400 for 320 gig !!!!

See yea,
Steve

Re: G-Raid Firewire Drives

Hey Steve, thanks for your feedback. It's nice to here that you have not had any problems with your drives. I have been using a 320GB G-Raid and it has been great. I think I will start buying them instead of the LaCie drives for all my future projects. I don't mind paying a little more for the higher quality drives that are inside. I will keep you guys posted if I run into any problems or failures, but in the mean time these seem like very soild firewire drives.

just wondering as far as using the file project- when you capture a tape do you captue now the whole tape or pick a specific timecode to capture.
Just wondering when you try to restore a project a recapture does the tape have to be the same capture time etc. to match up for the project to re link it?

Thanks

Re: G-Raid Firewire Drives

Hey Boomerang, I try and stay away from capture now. I usually mark an in point of 5 seconds and an out point about 5 to 10 seconds from the end of the tape, and then log the clip. I do alot of multi camera live concert shoots were the cameras roll until the show is over or they do a tape change and this works great. After I set all the ins and outs for the tapes and log everything I do a batch capture. This way if anything goes wrong (as long as you still have your project file) you can just re-capture the media and reconnect to the project. It has saved me more than once. Hope this helps.

Re: G-Raid Firewire Drives

Oh and by the way everything I just said pretains to FCP. I'm not sure if FCE has batch capture or not. I know it doesn't for HDV footage but not sure about regular DV.
