G-Raid external hard drives

I'm editing a feature length film on my Imac (2 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 1GB SDRAM). I've got about 30 minutes of footage logged so far and it seems to be slowing me down a bit already. I'm looking into the G-Raid 500GB external hard drive (see http://dvcreators.net/g-raid-hard-drives) Was wondering if anyone has any experience with these? Is the G-Raid fast enough to work off of? I'd love to keep my entire movie project on the G-Raid seperate from my other computer stuff. I don't know if this is possible though(or smart). Any help is appreciated.

Your media files should always be on a seperate drive from your application (FCP). While you "can" edit off the boot drive, its really not recommonded in any way shape or form. It basically does as you've experienced, hamper your system performance. In the long run that can lead to a lot worse then just slowing you down.

The G-Raid's have a good reputation and would do the job for you. I think quite a few forum regulars use them with good results. You could also go with something like the new Western Digital 1TB Raid drives. I haven't used them yet, but like most hard drives out there WD is in the pack (some people like it, some people don't, there is no definitive good or bad brand). Not to say don't use the G-Raid, just that it doesn't have to be your only option.

You might want to up your RAM in that system though. I don't think I'd do much editing with FCP with anything less than 2GB. That's just me though.

cheers.

G-Raids are GREAT drives...excellent for video editing. I have three of these...the older ones. The new ones (G-Raid2) are good too...just don't daisy chain them. For some reason Daisy chaining FW800 drives is a problem for a lot of people. But if you don't need to daisy chain, then these are great.

If you do need to get more than one and need to daisy chain, CalDigit Firewire VR is the only drives that can do this at this time. I have one of these too.

Daisy Chaining wasn't an issue on older G-Raids...only the new ones.
