Fx Effects Bleed-over

I have shot some DVX100B footage in letterbox mode, and when I get it into post and add certain effects to it, they bleed onto the letterbox margins. I realize that those margins are part of the image, but is there any way to confine the effects to the picture area only?

I am editing in Vegas 7.

I had to find out the hard way like u. I'm using Vegas 6 so I don't think anything changed in 7, I think once you add the Fx to the whole image, everything is affected, including those bars.

What I did was, I went into the properties of the FX and tweeked some things until it match the letter box which in my case I needed the letter box to stay it's original black color. I don't know what kind of Fx ur adding, but I was doing color correction with Magic Bullet.

And when I added an fx that was a little too bright, my letter box was also affected... but if ur adding another type of Fx like muzzle flash I don't think it would affect the letter box, why don't you tell us what kind of fx ur adding.

Well, I've noticed it with several effects, although the one that I am trying to use at the moment is one of the Magic Bullet Look Suite presets, called: Tropico Wash. It isn't a problem until I boost the White Diffusion (grade), which causes the highlights to bleed into the bars.

I'm wondering if I am going to have mask the viewfinder and shoot in 4:3 non-letterbox mode, although I'd prefer not to if possible. Fortunately this was test footage.

Any suggestions?

A very simple way of confining the space is to add two tracks above your video tracks. On each of these tracks lay a black (generated media). Go into the event pan/crop on each of these and move them to the top and bottom of the frame to match your letterbox bars. That should do the trick.

Hey Scharky, I just wanna say I tried your suggestion and it worked like a charm...

thanks for the tip

You can also crop the image to 16:9 and work in a 16:9 project. Will take care of any problems like this.
