Funny People

I didn't see one up here for this movie and I would like to see what you guys think.
My opinion is this is one of the best comedies I have seen. Judd Apatow is at the top of his game. I would give a detailed review but I don't think anyone would want to hear me ramble on about how much I loved it.

Saw this one today with my daughter. We both thought it was really funny. You gotta know when you see Sandler, Rogen, and that other guy, that you are in for a particular brand of humor that is not always to multi-generational tastes. It is rated-R for a reason. Lots of "those" kinds of jokes. I felt kinda bad for an elderly couple who just may have been out for an early date because they actually got up and left about fifteen minutes into it. Sad

Aside from that, I'd like to say that I've started to develop a deeper respect for Adam Sandler for the projects he has done lately. And Jud Apatow just can't seem to lose these days! Its no secret that Funny People revolves around the fact that a comedian at the top of his success finds out he has a grim outlook healthwise, and turns to an up-and-coming young comedian to write jokes for him. The journey of their friendship and the changes they each go through over the course of the story is half the enjoyment...the comedy and jokes were the other half.

If you can take the crass sort of humor it dishes out, I say go for it. Great message in the story. Also, for anyone interested, Apatow's video diary for this project is available on Hulu.com.

I really dug this film. Easily Apatow's best film. The problem I had with Knocked Up is that is approached serious subject matter, and although it did get serious at times, the comedy was kind of broad, and the improv seemed like directionless improv, so the whole thing was a bit uneven. But Funny People had a consistent tone that balanced different emotions beautifully. And although people are complaining about the run time, it never felt like 146 minutes to me. IN fact, I was enjoying it so much I was sad to see it end. And of course Janusz Kaminiski's cinematography was great as usual. And the cast is great as well.

I feel the same way Billy. It never felt too long to me and nothing seemed forced. Sandler was great and up there with his punch drunk love performance. I was really surprised by Seth Rogan though. He was very good.

I totally agree with you guys. I loved this film. One of my favorite moments was when he pulls out his cell phone. I won't give it away, but that simple gesture not only turned the plot 180 degrees, but said more about his character than any acting could have. Funny that some reviews are so negative.

That is a great moment with the phone. I think a lot of people are reacting negatively because the film is not what they expect. They think it will be like 40 year old virgin or superbad and it isn't. It has all the laughs but more of the serious. There are fairly long periods where there isn't anything hysterical and that might bother some people. Apatow found a way to blend the comedy and the drama very realistically and it all came together really well for me.

I think people misread the film completely. It's not really about people in funny situations, it's about situations in the real world where the people involved just happen to be funny. There are other bits of actual comedy in there aside from the rest but most of the time the humor is more in a real world sense not a "it's a comedy so lets throw a gag at you" type of thing.

Although extremely crass in some places, maybe a bit too much...I thought it did blend things well and make a good point at the end.

I knew what to expect going in and the film delivered. My only problem was that it delivered too much. They could have easily cut 20 minutes from this film.

Aside from it dragging a bit in spots I enjoyed it.
