Funny Experience with Lens Filters Today

I went down to Simon's Cameras next to Edgewise Media today to check out some lens filters. Namely a star filter and diffusion. I brought my HVX to test on a couple 82mm filters, and the diffusion didn't seem to diffuse the image at all. The clerk helped me pick a couple higher diffusion ratings, but both were virtually negligible. It wasn't until I got to the Nikon diffusion that it softened the image.

Moving on, I tried the star filters with a 82mm to 72mm stepdown ring. I noticed there was a grid pattern in the viewfinder. I looked up and it was just a fluorescent light fixture. So I look at the filter, and sure enough, all of those visible lines were in the filter itself. Apparently the HVX or HD is so sharp that it picks up the lines on a star filter. Does anyone have a workaround to this problem? Do you just use a mattebox and drop in a star filter?

Where is the best website to buy inexpensive high quality lens filters? Variety is important, of course.

The only filters I cautiously use on front are Polarisers and ND Grads because of the fact that the DOF is so extreme that it will see dust and stuff on anything in front of the lens. eg the grids in a star filter. The mentioned filters are the only two that I can not do in post.

I needed stars the other day but I just posted them in. Not quite the same but close enough. Fooled the client and the crew.

So what kind of plug-in or effect do you use to get stars in post? Thanks...

I dont think MB has any.

I have used Matrox stars effect and combined with lens flares (and motion) they created a very convincing look - including lens refractions.

They can be made in AEFX also
