Full HD slow export

Hello,

I exported some videos from FCPX without major problems, but today I edited a 10 minutes clip from GH2 footage and tried to export direct to Apple device (Apple TV) and the time went to 2 hours!
The test is in a 2.66 i7 macbook pro with 8gb RAM.

Initially I was using the GH2 files without transcoding, rendering the timeline (1080) and exporting.
Then I transcoded the files to PRORES, rendered the project but exporting time didn't change so much.

I only could get a better export when using Export Media (no convertion right ?), about 20 minutes.
But I think all exports are taking too long.

What could be the problem ?

Thanks,
Ulisses

I'm trying to duplicate this, and I'm getting real time exports. But I'm on a beefy tower.

If you're editing Long-GOP clips, there has to be transcoding as the "GOP" has to be rebuilt from scratch. Edits and other things have to be on I-Frames which must be at the beginning of each "GOP".

Export with "Current Settings". Transcode either in the Finder (yes, you can do this directly in the Finder) or in Compressor. I find FCP does take longer for YouTube and Apple device stuff internally.

Thanks Ben,

I'm thinking in reinstall my OS, updating to Lion...
Maybe my macbook OS, system HD almost Full can be my problem.

If I use the GH2 (.mts) clips directly in project (no transcoding) and export using current settings I guess i get PRORES in the output, so always there is a transcoding ?

Thanks,
Ulisses

Also try to export to Apple Devices -> Apple TV (Full HD)

This case for a 10 minutes video I get 1 hour in a MAC PRO TOWER and 1:40 in my MACBOOK PRO.
In Compressor it is about the same time, I can get better speed in external apps like HANDBREAK.

Thanks,
Ulisses

Reinstalling the OS is not the solution. Save yourself the headache. Those days are over.

A full drive can cause problems, not sure if it'd cause speed problems. Have at least 10-15% of it's capacity free.

What would really help is if you transcoded to ProRes to start with and edited with ProRes. Then the output would fly for sure.

I've noticed a few glitches with the render engine while using the stabilization plugin, especially if you're editing native DSLR footage and the offending clips are unrendered. Had a project get stuck at 18% with gradually increasing estimated render time. I went in and rendered the offending clips and then had no issues with export afterwards.

My projct is only 5 clips, total 10 minutes. Exporting using current settings takes 10 minutes. Exporting to Apple TV (h264), 100 minutes. No plugins in clips, just a simple edit, fades and dissolves.

Thanks,
Ulisses
