FS700 greenscreen - key is wonkers

well, a few things that may be adding to the difficulty: the screen is a tad dark, and the actor is moving in and out of focus. a big part of pulling a good key is refining the edge details, and in your case the edge details change focus. post the key results you're getting, could be something else...

Dont mind the out of focus part. The actual shot used is just a second or two while the actor is in focus. I just wanted to use the full raw file and not introduce more compression etc.

There's nothing wrong with the source really. Sadly it's down to keying technique, keying is a total art form.

I'd have thought Keylight would give best results, what problems are you actually seeing?

Keying process goes something like do an edge key, then add a core onto of that. The edge you are focused on the hair without worrying about her face and then the core is just a hard core taking care of the face.

But this source should key okay...

cheers

Assuming there wasn't an external recorder used here's what we experienced:

The aliasing of the internal downscaling from 4K to HD was horrible for greenscreen. Pixel peeping revealed dark outlines around parts of the subject that were not green, but were not the subject either. Sharpness adjustment couldn't fix it. We had much better luck keying with an external (RAW) recorder. Also, Primatte seemed to help the most.

Yeah this was shot on the FS700 internally, and what you are describing is mostly what im seeing too. They key goes mental on the edges and we have to blur the key into the subjects hair, which looks horrible ofcourse.

I have keyed material myself in filmschool in 2008, and that material keyed instantly! Think we spent an hour getting the key right on footage from 1080p XDCAM. But this material is just horrible to work with.

This was shot in early 2014. I immediately afterward bought the Odyssey recorder and have never shot FS700 internal since then. But ive not shot any greenscreen since then either. No need for it in my market i guess. (I need to sell my own jobs, im not getting hired by other producers, as there are none). So i cant compare the two sources vs. each other.

I think 8bit out of that camera is what 4 1 1 or 4 1 0...even shooting 4k to prorez 10bit w/ 7q only gets you to 4 2 2...which in my opinion is the bare minimum. I just comped a green screen job using 10bt 7q material and even using both Smoke & Flame which have great keying toolsets...still gave me fits on certain shots.

So have others have said...I wouldn't be surprised by poor results straight out of the 700.

This shot is totally keyable, but it's not a one click deal!
2 things: use Neat video to clean your footage before keying
and follow this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paYuWCEZ2Kg
Be patient and experiment, you will get there!
