FS-100.. silly questions

I have noticed on a few occasions that my lastclip.txt file does not match the number on the last audio or video or clip file. So far my solution to this has to just not format the FS untill the editor is sure the clips all work. So far no problems its just a lil nervewracking id hate to loose footage.

Secondly I wanted to know if it would be okay to do a partial transfer of only certain clips, I mean that I would like to shoot say 20-40mins of footage and then offload it during a break. Then later in the day I would like to transfer the rest of the contents folder without re-transferring the first half. Can I just start off where the recording session began and of course transfer the new lastclip.txt?

I would test this stuff out myself but I still dont have HD editing software, I will tho! some time this semester to get Avid's educational discount.

Thanks

As far as partial transferring of files. Yes it's quite easy. Just make absolutely sure that you unload the entire clips that you need and that they play (i.e. you transfer your audio with your video files together) Also you can delete certain clips (files in Firestore) on your computer while not having to do it in firestore etc. I would assume you are doing partial downloads as to create more room on your firestore drive?

As far as your remark regarding that the codes don't match - did you hit Organize Clips or Organize P2 before viewing the .txt files? I know MXF breaks up files when they are longer than 2.16 minutes - maybe that is what you are referring to. You have to connect the MXF files in Avid/Final Cut etc.

was this helpful?

Ya kinda helpful,

I'm doing the partial transfer so that I can backup the files halfway through a shoot, or I do a partial backup so I dont have to wait around as much at the end of the day while the files transfer and still have everything on the FS untill the editor gives me the ok.

I always organize P2 before connecting the drive to a computer. Just wondering if it was common to have this file not match.

What you want to do is not that cut and dry with the FS-100.

Here's how you do a partial back up. When you connect the FS-100 to your computer, copy the entire contents of the FS-100! Then continue shooting. When the day is over, run the P2 Organize and you'll have your MXF clips. You won't have anything "useful" before you run P2 Organize on the FS-100. So why do the partial back up? Cause if something happens. You can hook it up to your computer, delete everything on the drive, replace it with your back up, THEN run Organzie P2, and you'll have only the clips shot before that back up.

I've used the FS-100 for a long time, there's never been any issues with the LASTCLIP.TXT file with them. Ignore it. But do test all your footage before you Format the FS-100, or at least to a full copy of your LASTCLIP.TXT and CONTENTS folder before running the Format function. You'll be safe.

I'd not worry about backing up during a break. Not that it's not a bad idea. But, the FS-100 is plenty stable, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
