FS-100 Noise Problem

Is anyone else having problems with the noise created from the FS-100? It's the only thing that really bothers me about it besides there being no thumbnails.

My FS-100 will start relatively quietly, and after a few takes the fan will start up during the take. It will go on and off. How are people dealing with this problem? I don't want to block the fan holes with a blimp or anything. But the sound guys hate me now.

Suggestions?

Don't mount the FS-100 on the camera if the fan is a problem. Velcro it down lower on your tripod leg. I find that if I have it 3 feet from my HVX, the camera mics don't pick it up. With a 10 foot FW cable, you should be able to place it anywhere and not interfear with your on-cam or external mics.

With a few seconds of thought, I have no problems with the fan sound from my FS-100. Tapeless just takes some pre-planning.

MannHands,
The fan noise on the FS100 is definitely loud. And to think most of us try to turn of A/C systems and refrigerators when we shoot... it's ironic then to use the FS100.

However, when you take a moment to think about what causes heat in the drive.... the #1 culprit is charging the battery. I recommend shooting with the battery completely charged -- or with no battery and AC only -- or with spare batteries on-hand and run off battery only. These options should reduce heat issues and therefore reduce the frequency with which the FS100 fan has to run...

Of course, if it's hot where you're shooting, good luck.

I personally keep it far away from the camera. If on a tripod, thats where I mount it, on a a holster at the bottom of the tripod. If Im shooting with the on Cam mic then Im doing everything I can to use P2s. The camera form is awkward enough without a firestore hanging off it. If I have to I use the belt clip. It truely is not loud unless it is within 3 or so feet.
Also, if you have sound guys, why are you woried about the sound from the camera mic. Lets face it the HVX cam mic is not very good, not for broadcast at least. With a sound guy, Mics should be more than 3 feet away from the camera, so put the firestore behind your back. It hasnt been an issue for me yet.

I did a test with the FS-100 mounted below the camera in a Bebob Box FS. It was the only device on in the room besides the HVX200. The sound from the fan is only audible if I raise the gain a LOT.

You could cut the fan wire, add a switch. Then just turn it off durring each take. Not so good for documentary work with long takes...

Has anyone had compressed file lose problems with FS-100. Is it a capacity problem or what. My friend has one and whenever he gets into long shoots has had corruption issues.

Well, this really should be it's own topic, but be sure he's running the latest version of the firmware (3.0), and has all of his settings on the FS and HVX set properly.

My bet is he's running a Mac, which reports corrupted files wether they're corrupt for real or not. FCP 5.1.4 fixes that. Feel free to PM me on this, it actually has been hashed to death on various posts.
