FS-100 How to use 720 over/under crank

I just purchased fs-100 for my panasonic hvx200 and it works great. My problem is I want to shot in 720 and use the vari-over/under cranks that this camera was designed to do.

I looked on the fs-100 and it doesn't have that format. The camera will only let you use the extra shooting modes if you have p2 button switched on. Can anyone share some information on the subject.

thank you.

The FireWire port on the current HVX200 cameras is silent when you're shooting in any of the Native or Variable Frame Rate Modes. So P2 is the only thing you can record these to, since the FireStore connects via the FireWire port. I wonder if some future firmware upgrade might correct this? Wishful thinking?

Are you saying that the FS-100 cannot record formats like 720/60p??? No overcranking with the FS-100?

Thanks, I have checked out that PDF.

Some people are posting footage taken at like 4fps, which comes out looking like time-lapse. Is that possible with the FS-100?

No, that's not what I'm saying, the only thing I'm saying is you can't record the variable frame rates directly in Native mode, you can, however, extract them in post as Matthew McEwen points out.

Ok, once and for all, you CAN RECORD VARIABLE FRAME RATES ON AN FS-100, PERIOD!

You just can't do it in 24pNative format. You have to do it in regular 24p format, then when you import to Final Cut Pro 5.1, use the Frame Rate Converter to convert all you clips you shot with variable (non-24) frame rates to 24fps. Presto, in-camera slo-mo!

I've been putting an HVX200 with a FS-100 through it's paces a LOT these past two weeks. Been using Final Cut Pro 5.1 to process my P2 footage. It's a great system.

Keeping my fingers crossed Focus can come up with an upgrade to allow recording 24pNative via firewire to the FS-100.

YES, YOU CAN DO VARIABLE FRAME RATES TO THE FS-100! Remember that the HVX200 in 24p mode works JUST LIKE THE DVX100 in 24p mode! You don't tell you Mini-DV tape to record a different frame rate, right? You don't tell the FS-100 to record a different frame rate. It's all NTSC 60 in the package, you remove the "added" frames with Final Cut's FRC.

Ok, if anyone says the FS-100 can't do variable frame rates ONE MORE TIME, I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN!!!!!

The FS-100 can recored anything the HVX200 can do with the only exception being 24pNative. And let's hope they can upgrade for that format, too!

So the Frame Rate Convertor only works with final cut? Is there any convertor that works for windows. (Canopus software)

Thanks for all this good info

The Frame Rate Converter I'm talking about is an Apple product specifically for Final Cut Pro 5.x and is on the FCP 5.1 install disk.

For Windows, you'd have to check your specific NLE and how it handles P2 and DVCPRO-HD footage.

I want to use the 720 VARIABLE FRAME RATES that the camera offers, I don't want to bounce around in post. If I can't get that quality don't you think it's better to go wit the hard drive that hooks into the p2 slot?
