Yo. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I'm looking for a way to make a professional-looking (or semi) DVD box cover for my indie movie Nowhere Johnny. You know, the artwork printed right onto the disc and the whole shindig. I'm looking to send DVD screeners out there and I want it to look nice. I wanna know what can I get to have this ability and the cheapest way, like some device I can buy online or a cheap service from a legit company's offering. I'm pretty sure I can do it at my office where my computer is, but I don't know what to buy in order for me to do this. Any help would be cool.

do you need help with the artwork itself, or just the hardware.

you can look into 'dvd replication' and 'dvd duplication'.

there are desktop dvd duplication devices that can print and burn dvds, and there are printers that can print on dvds made for duplication.

Printable discs with a printer that can do it are a great way to go, but I don't know the pricing. Can't help you with boxes other than cardboard and crayons.

Hi. I have the artwork. Just wanna know specifically the most affordable hardware I can get or if there's a legit service that makes DVD covers for cheap. I googled some of these said DVD printers and the cheapest one I saw was over 1k. There could be cheaper solutions is what I'm fishing for I suppose -- other crayons. Haha

There are cheap Epson inkjet printers that will print on printable DVDs (which cost about 30 cents) and could do case inserts also. That would be cheaper for, say, 50-100 disks although you have to hope noone spills their coffee on their disk as the ink will run. For 500 copies, that Diskmakers price is likely cheaper.

What I do for DVD Cases is design the cover to size on an 11x17" document with crop-marks. I bring a high quality JPEG or PDF to Staplese on a flashdrive and have them print any amount I need on 11x17" glossy paper at 100% scale. Prints run $1.98 each, and I cut the sleeves out using a metal ruler on a self-healing mat with an exacto blade.

The $1k quotes you were looking at were probably for pressed (replicated) discs, rather than burned (duplicated) ones - so it was subject to minimum quantities set by the manufacturer, probably a minimum run of 1,000 discs. All depends on how many copies you want, for short-run stuff you can probably get it done for about $2-3 per disc. I would outsource if you are getting anything more than 20 or so copies done. The time it will take you to burn/print them all yourself is not worth the pennies you might save.
