Frosted Perspex and LED Strips vs Edge Lighting

I have a project to film where space is very tight - no option to change the location. I need a lsofarge soft light source; but it needs to blend into the environment; partly because the light itself will inevitably be in some of the shots; secondly because the day-to-day users of the space will not want to have their work impinged upon too much.

I was thinking of doing a little DIY, building upon an existing storage unit. I was thinking that several runs of high CRI LED strip against the wall, covered by a sheet of frosted perspex might do the trick. This could give me a 2.4m x 1.2m light source, only a few cm thick. I'd estimate 1cm for the LED, 3cm gap, then 0.5cm for the perspex. I could effectively build this into/on top of the existing storage unit such that when switched off, it looked just like a section of white wall.

Has anyone done anything similar?

I'm also interested in an edge lighting approach (I don't need massive light output), but I'm not sure what tricks are used by the commercial units to ensure even light distribution.

Grateful for any advice!

DIY Perks has a project turning an old flat panel TV into a light via replacing its backlight source. Might look into something similar. People throw away broken TVs every day
