I know this is an elementary question but how do you get that look to where you have an object in the front in focus and the background out of focus? Is that even possible shooting digital?
that funny.. ;D That's how I still describe it to my DP's. "Yeah, umm Tom, give me that shot where the dude is in focus and everything else behind him is fuzzy. Can you do that? thanks."
Best way to do this is make sure your aperature is open all the way. Then give yourself some distance from the actor or object you want in focus and zoom in. This is one method to get some depth of field
You need to place the camera a good distance away from your talent then compress your shot i.e. zoom into them. When you do this it will blur the background out. I use this effect shooting News reporters alot.
I usually have my object in foreground stay still and have everything else in the background move around real fast to create that fuzzy blur; seems to work but everyone gets tired fast.

Actually, that's a way of getting less and less depth of field. Wich is exactly what Spezzy wanted to know. More depth would mean we see more and more in focus, while less depth means we only see a narrow plane in focus. Again the DOF tutorial is where it's at...
You guys are too much! Took a loot at the DOF tutorial and I think I'm getting the hang of it. I've still got a lot of experimenting to do. Just my luck I had to take the ol' girl in to get the heads cleaned. Oh well. Maybe I can get the bill to look out of focus when it comes.
