From Vegas to Premiere

So, I just switched from Vegas to Premiere and it looks good so far but I still lack a few tools/functions I had in Vegas.
If anyone can help...

1) Is it possible to cut a clip just by putting the mouse at the point you want to cut it, and use a shortcut ?
For instance in Vegas you could put your mouse let's say half clip, use "C" on the keyboard and the clip was cut in half.
On Premiere, there's a razor tool but I dont find it as precise as the method used on Vegas.

2) How can I compare a clip before and after I applied an effect/color correction to it ?
I've seen that the workspace "color correction" has 2 windows so I guess it's supposed to compare before and after, but when I apply an effect on a clip, the 2 windows display the same : with effect applied. (used Magic bullet looks here)

The Razor tool is the only way to cut with the mouse. You can also place the CTI at the desired cut point and hit CTRL+K to make a cut.

All effects have a little "fx" icon right next to their name in the Effects Control Panel. Toggle that to disable the effect.

There is an even cooler Shortcut in CS6

'Edit to CTI Point'.

Depending on whatever the edit mode at the End of the Clip ( eg Ripple Left, Ripple Right, Trim Left, Trim Right. Rolling edit etc..).. it will make the edit to the point where the CTI is

Thanks ! Very useful.

A third question : is it possible to apply an effect to a whole track in one simple click ?
In Vegas, it's possible to apply an effect to a track, I couldn't find that in Premiere.
I read about methods like applying the effect to one clip and then copying attributes to the other, it works, but it's a waste of time, is it really impossible to affect the track itself ?

Yea. Select them all in the timeline and double click the effect and it will apply to all that are selected.

You cant change the fx setting for the whole track that way though.
Vegas is designed along the lines of Sony's music editing software so does provide some very user friendly features, I found the transition to Premier to have some growing pains too.

CS6 has a new feature called Adjustment Layers. Create one of those and add it to a video track above all the clips you want the effect on. Add the effect to the AL and it will "show through" to all underlying clips.

Very nice, Jim. That's what I was looking for.
To be honest I still find it easier in Vegas, but it's ok, that's not the kind of operation you do every 10 seconds.
I'm pretty happy I found out keyboard shortcuts can be modified, too. (I mean, why "CTRL+K" when you can just "K")

Aside that, I've tried to use the Adobe Bridge, to transfer a project into After effects, it works pretty well but is it only able to transfer the sequence as a single video ? Not the editing as it is in Premiere ? (I mean every clip rather than a whole video containing all of them)

hi all, i also have a question if i may ask... :)

i'll show you my common scenario first:

just recently i did a corporate movie, with a lot of motion tracking and animations...

when i started the animations, just for getting the look, i typed in random technical and common stuff like "Know How" and so on...
meanwhile the review, the client asked me if i could briefly print out a sheet where all titles i made are listed and summarized, that he can discuss them with others and cross them out and write any other word to be replaced.

so my question is, is there any function in the PP Suite that allows me to view lets say all Text layers i created in all compositions of my single project, to quickly replace the words with others and have a printable overview?

is this to be understood so far?

thanks in advance!

Yup! This is one of Premiere's great strengths...how well it plays with AE. Select all your video and audio (command-a). Then, go to file, Adobe Dynamic Link >> Replace with After Effects Comp. AE will open with all your video tracks, complete with cuts.

Thank you, it's perfect.

I too am a former Vegas user. The first thing I did in CS6 was change the CTRL+K shortcut to S like it is in Vegas. I loose the Snap shortcut that way, but I never mess with it anyway, so S for split works just fine. Be warned though, it only works on selected tracks.

Me again. Started to work with waveforms for color correction but the measures are from 0.1 to 1.2 instead of the usual -20 to 120 I used to have in Vegas. Any way to set this the same way (IRE ?) ?

Edit : so apparently I should have a setup button on the waveform but it's not there and I can't find how to get it back...

Aw, ok. Thanks. I'll google references in volt but any tips ? I've got the black line already, but what value is white, and between where and where is supposed to be the skin ?

Here is a tip for both of you

Put some Black Video (create New Item) ..and some Color Bars on the timeline. You will see where they sit.
