Fresnel 150's

Don't also forget that lens diameter is equally if not more important. Comparing a 150 and 300 even when dimmed/globed to the same level are still not the the same thing.

BINGO!

let's buy some!

let's buy some!

Ok, after all this posts, I'm buying it.
Who can tell me where to buy a cheap 150 and a 300 fresnel 220 volts?
... and I live in Barcelona, Spain....
thnx

If you can budget for it, I got a Dedo (the small one) that is simply amazing. Completely destroys the Pepper 100 I have. Of course it should for the price...

Hey Tim. How you been? Did you get started on that feature this Summer? If you want to get rid of the Pepper 100, just let me know as I could use a second one.

Doing ok. We got a bit delayed - starting to go through the script revisions now and are shooting tentatively for the fall/early winter. I've also been bogged down a LOT with helping out on another project.

How's things with you?

So... let's say that you are shooting with the HVX with a 35mm adapter, looking to do mostly interior location shooting in narrative style... because of the lower latitude of the HVX compared to the DVX, plus the extra 1-2 stop loss of the adapter, would the 150w still be a useful choice as the many times above mentioned back light?

Thanks ahead of time for your .02 on this. I'm a hopefully soon to be owner of an HVX (waiting for the 16G P2 shortage to be remedied) and am really looking at getting an SGPro adapter to go along with it. I keep reading about the light loss of the adapters, and I'm trying to take that into consideration for ordering lights.

I'm in a similar situation as you DeadEyesSmiling. I'm using the HVX, 35mm Adapter and on the brink of putting together a lighting kit.

I was looking at the Arri Softbank IV for convenience (everything in one case, and seems cheaper than putting together individually). It contains: 2 150w, 1 300w, 1 650w and a 1K open face. Unfortunately the advice on this seems to be all over the place.

Everyone seems to agree that one 150w is useful. And I've heard a few say more 150s are good, but the majority seem to think a second 300w or 650w would be better. I'm inclined to agree (knowing the light loss issues), but unfortunately Arri doesn't seem to make a 5 light kit subbing the second 150w for a 300w or 650w. So I'm wondering if I can get by with the 150w, or do I bite the bullet get a 4 light kit and then end up hauling an extra light around with me.

Anyway, but that's my issue (welcoming input). I'd say if you have the option get a good mix, you'd likely want one 150w for hiding in any cramped interiors on your shoot, but if possible get a second 300w for the backlight instead.

Now someone please tell me I'm wrong so I can buy my kit:smile:

keep the 150. Yes the adapter sucks up light, but it is great as a punch light, just to brighten up a certain section of someones face by a few footcandles.

It is also great as an eye light. ( not sure of the technical term )

get the kit!

Ok, I'm convinced :)

The Arri Softbank IV seems cheapest from Adorama, does anyone have anything negative to say about them?

Also what's the deal with dvxuser discounts, I can never find a list saying who offers those.

Hi:

We own two of the Softbank IV kits, they are great and very useful and flexible. Adorama is okay as is B&H, have bought from both of them.

Best,

Dan

Cool, thanks Dan, ordered from Adorama today, should be here in a week or two.

DeadEyesSmiling, once they come in I'll do a couple tests and let you know about the 150w and light loss with the HVX/35mm adapter combo.

Hey DeadEyesSmiling, got my Arri kit with the 2 150Ws today. Thought I'd let you know that they were great. We did lots of tests with the HVX and Brevis 35mm adapter and found them useful in all kind of situations with no real light loss problems.

Only complaint is that the case is friggin heavy hauling up and down stairs:)

Awesome! Thanks so much for keeping up to date on this stuff! I'm hoping to be purchasing lights in the next couple months, and I'll definately have to take a look at that kit. Thanks again.

I've got a 350, 650, and two 1K softboxes for most of my shoots. I've also got two 2k fresnel's, but those things trip circuits like crazy!

Hi Brandon:

Not sure about the Arri 2k fresnels, but I own a Mole Mighty 2k open face and I found out that there is a 1,500 watt globe available for it so I bought one and have had great success using it. No worries about tripping circuits and still substantially more output than a 1k. You might want to look into it.

As far as I know VIDLED is the guy to give original props to... and yeah, I'm gonna' order 3 of them right now also.

Could you use one or two Vidleds as a replacement for a 150 for hairlight and slash lighting?

I am trying to keep my kit light and cool so I am hoping to stay away from tungsten.

Thanks.
