Fresnel 150's

I have heard they are a very useful light because they are compact, affordable, dont run too hot, and you can put them in tighter spots than other bigger lights. Alot of people recommend the Arri 150's

For what I do, they would be great.
I have the 300's, but have to rebulb them, or move them back further to prevent them from being too powerful.

150 Watt fresnels are, indeed, very useful. As has been mentioned, they can be hidden in tight spots and they can be spotted or flooded to suit the scene.

I was shooting in an old elevator shaft with a 650 as my main fill, a 1k with a softbox at the top of the shaft and I used a 150 tucked off the to the side as my backlight. Without that little puppy my scene would have not popped as much as would have wanted.

I agree that certain situations the 150's come in handy...
but for versatility, I think the 300's are a better buy.

I use the 300's way more often than the 150's.

The 300 is my favourite light - it's small enough to be tucked away in tight areas, good as a good backlight but big enough in tighter conditions to use a key.

The 150 has saved me a few times also though. I've shot in washrooms where they rig nicely on to the shower curtain bar for backlight, etc.

I find a good blend of 150's, 300's and 650's keeps you prepared for most situations.

Thanks again for the help, I went for the Arri's, two 150's, two 300's, two 650's,
and a Desisti $1k. I already have three Lowel Softlites so this should all be pretty versatile.

luv my lil 150!

I use Pepper 100's re-lamped with 200w lamps. Same idea , different flavor. Much smaller than 300's, almost as much output. I just wish I had more of them.

I used to use Mole Tweenie II's lamped down to 300w and I found that to be overkill 80% of the time... maybe it's just the type of shoots I usually find myself on.

300w (or even 650 believe it or not) is good for shooting through a cookie or silk... or a deep color slash in the background... but that 150 is gonna' be your rim all the time in interviews and any situation where you want to pop somebody off the background.

Everybody should have at least one 150 and a 300+

I sold my Moles but I gotta' get something like that back... cookies and hair lights are pretty standard setups... and I use that Arri 150 all the time. The cookie and slash can be any light with enough punch, but for some reason the 150 is has always been that little Arri.

Thanks, that gives me confidence in my purchase. Looks like you're doing quite a job on your own creation, I'll be keeping an eye on that. Wonder if someone is making flags, couldn't find much so I just bought a bunch of Matthews.

I have three of the Arri 150s, one of the most useful lights I have ever used. Brilliant for tabletop shoots, product shoots, interviews as a hairlight or eye light. They are invaluable to me, can't live without them.

My new homemade kit (I am sick of hauling those damn Arri silver lighting cases in and out of my truck) are three of the Arri 150s, a 300 and a 650 in a heavy duty plastic tote. I break all of the rules and use C-stands as light stands. I chucked the Arri kit stands, they are flimsy and take up too much floor space, I like the 40" arms on C-stands much better.

Especially with sensitive DV and HD camcorders, I have not pulled out my 1k and 2k lights for years, I just don't need that much output anymore for most scenes.

You'll love the 150s, they rock!

Dan

Boy they sure do, I just got them all today, I agree thrice - takes two to carry the case, the stands aren't that great, and the 150's, well, they rock. I want more....
I think maybe I'll put the 650's in the yard tonight and invite over a cheerleading team.

So the ideal setup would be 2 150's; 1 300; 1 650 or 1 150; 2 300's; 1 650?

I would go for the 2 300's over 2 150's myself. I find them just a little more versatile all around than the 150's.

Thanks. How about power? Do you ever run into problems with all plugged in at once? How do you typically run the power, into the same outlet or do you try to run extension cords to other areas to plug in?
