FRESH Letus35 Grabs - DVX100a

So waltind and I live near Quyen, the guy who's designed, builds, and sellls the Letus35. He was kind enough to let us come by his location & test it out with my DVX100a to see what we thought of it.

Some things he's done to the Letus35 to make it even more attractive (add-on pricing though) is offer it with a 72mm thread (no step down rings needed), a higher quality achromat glass, a Canon FD / Nikon AI reversable mount (VERY cool, I was impressed with that one), and a black anodized version for those who may be concerned with potential light reflection from the chrome/explosed metal jobs.

We were pressed for time as we'd eaten up most of our day with supply shopping & location scouting for our short (met up through DVXuser & decided to team up for the Sci-Fi Fest), so we were in & out the door pretty quickly. With some REALLY poor lighting (just some overhead flour's), here's a few grabs we obtained (to draw attention to any abberations, etc., I first blew these up in Photozoom Pro to 1920x wide, then imported back into Vegas & pulled the grabs from there at 720x wide):

Both images below with cell in/out of focus have the ground glass vibrating.

I'm REALLY sorry the lighting was so horrible. We hadn't gone there prepared for making a report to DVXuser with grabs, etc., but I figured that since I had these on hand, I'd at least provide what I had. It was a Canon wide angle lens that was on, so there's some barrel distortion, unfortunately ... shouldn't be an issue with a non-wide angle. We had to get VERY close to be able to fill the screen with the focus chart.

I'm pretty impressed, and for myself, plan on making a purchase this week. I'll admit, one of the features that works for me is that he's located so close, so if there are any problems I can do a face-to-face. Even still, though, we loved what we saw so far. He seems to be a pretty easy guy to work with.

The chromatic aberrations are pretty bad look at the right edges of the paper on last picture, and this is underexposed. The picture is still too soft. But thats just my opinion , I like the look of the G35, these have a low rezish look and feel to me.

From what I've seen, this tends to happen on most if not all of these adapters. Some have more some have less. I think with actual footage, not a chart, you will notice it less.

I think that is the result for the original image being blown up to HD resolution in PhotoZoom Pro first, and not the adapter. Envision, would you mind posting the original stills for comparison?[/QUOTE]

Non Blown up images

Non Blown up images

I'm not sure if you'll notice a difference. I can state that we were both impressed with the images when output to a TV/monitor (while uploading the footage & playback) ... more so than these simple stills.

The resolution charts are not framed properly and make the results somewhat invalid. The arrow heads need to be at the edge of the frame to get valid results. Also, the cart needs to be very parallel (and flatly lit) to the camera, these shots appear to be somewhat rotated.

Care to shoot them again and post the results?

Yeah, I would have liked to have had more time to set things up and test it, but we had limited time, and only had the available light to shoot with. I alos noticed that with the lens that was on the adapter, we were having a tough time getting it to fill the frame. it was a very wide angle lens and that picture was from anout 12" away.

Were we to do it over again, I would have brought a seperate stand and lights to put the chart on, and a good tripod to put the camera on. and then taken the footage. Lesson learned, and will know for the next time.

While it is not exactly parallel, some of what you are seeing is from the distortion of the wide angle lens. If you look at the cell phone pics you'll notice that the walls in the BG bow as well.

I know I (And I'm sure Envision as well) would not have a problem doing it again with a more correct setup. But I don't think that we'll have time, unless we buy one, as we are gearing up for our shoot.

As I mentioned before, since he is local I feel pretty good about buying from him, and I do feel that the results from it will be an excellent value for the cash spent, so I'll probably pick one up this week ... perhaps order today, to see if there's any prayer of having it for Wednesday's auditions. Just have to get a good lens too.

Hi, i'm thinking to assemble an adapter by myself and i'm finding soo many problems. On this grabs in my opinion there are too many defects: there is too much barrel distortion (bowel look) the greeen casting is very high on the left side and there is nothing really in focus... are you using pofessional methods to build the adapter? if yes i'll stop myself in trying

The unit looks pretty pro, and he's got everything cut to very specific, exact measurements. Posting these grabs was probably not the best idea, in hindsite, but we were eager to get anything up.

The barrel distortion, we believe, is due to the wide angle lens (I get the SAME exact look/effect using my Century Optics wide angle adapter on the DVX, and that's high quality glass).

The "green" you are referring to may be from the overhead flourecent bulbs ... we just went with scene setting 6, so there's nothing to offset the natural green hue that comes from those lights, and these are raw images from the NLE, with the exception of the first ones that we blew up to HD res first just to see if there was a difference.

We'll have footage, I'm sure, by the end of this week. Trust me, we want this to look as hot as possible, as we're planning on using this for our short film.

ok for those problems but the focus issue? for me also the res chart are out of focus... what are you using as GG?

The cell phone pix are slitghtly out of focus as I was doing a rack focus just by feel, rather the actual measurement, and marking, so it is not dead on. As for the res chart, that should be in focus as we used the chart from http://rondexter.com to pull focus, so the center is in focus, but I think that the edges are slightly off due to the barrel distortion. We just picked up a 100mm Nikon and a 135mm Canon lens, and if we are able to get the adapter (Letus35) by Wednesday we'll have some better comparison shots to post.

Yeah "We" picked up the lenses today! How is it I'M the one shelling out the dough so far?!?! :undecided:

LOL!!! Ok, you picked up the lens today - better?

It was REAL awkward, for sure, trying to frame something completely backwards. The easiest trick (which we didn't do there, but will on Wednesday) is to take a small magnet, and tape it to the inside of the LCD (when it's folded out for viewing, the magnet will go on the right of the screen, below the hinge). This will flip your image ... keep in mind, though, it will also flip all the information on your LCD as well ... so a magnet you can quickly pop in & out would be ideal as you need to read your info, frame, etc.

Oh, BTW, if you're talking about post, no problem at all ... just flip it vertically.

Ok, Ok, for all of you who wanted an accurately framed and lit res chart using the Letus35 here you go, check it out:

TestShot01.jpg

ok, well maybe that's not it.

I have to do some more testing to come up with good shots of the res chart, it has been a lot harder to get the right framing, and lighting on the chart then I had originally thought.

Here are some fun still we grabed using the Letus35-

As soon as I have some decent chart stills I'll post them.
