Interested in purchasing a french slate to use on all of my productions. Anyone have any hints as to where I might be able to find one?

hi ryan,

the only french slate i have heard of is the stuff you put on the roof of old houses !!!
cheers
ian

ps what is a french slate

Oh, a slate from france. Or...also known as a marker, or a clapper, or sticks...or? I don't know. The thing you use to ID and synch all of your takes.

Obviously the major difference is that everything is in french, but the marker is also on the bottom. Every take feels like a tail slate!

:) haha. I had no idea their clappers were upside down. Crazy!

hi ryan

i had a vague idea they sometimes used up side down clappers

but never occured to me they had a name for it.

your local panavision probably has a large assortment of slates.

i know ours has .

you could probably buy a blank one and customise it
to your needs.

cheers

I am going through a French New Way block from Netflix and noticed in the BTS footage that the slate had the sticks on the bottom. I thought that was just because of the age of the movies. I did not know that it was still the current slate style. I am half tempted to get one, just to f**k with folks! So 35 Euros is about $42.23, not bad.

if you think , it is a lot clever, because to clap you just need to lift the bar.
So the slate is naturally open.

Term: Tail Slate
Definition: A tail slate is the mark on a shot that occurs at the end of a film rather than the start of the film. Usually the phrase, “Tail Slate!” is called out prior to clapping the slate. This ensures that the person syncing the film understands what is going on. When doing a tail slate, the slate is positioned upside down in order to mark the shot. The upside down position signifies that the mark is completed at the end of the film.
