Freezing Time

Hey folks,

Searching the forum for "time freeze" and variations on that did not yield what I'm looking for. Examples of the effect I'm referring to can be seen in films like Cashback and Time Stoppers, or in Creed's music video for their song Higher (especially towards the end). Everything in the frame stops, and the camera tracks around the frozen action (and no, the characters are not just standing there trying not to move!). I posed this question to the forum once before a long time ago and everyone said green screen it, but that just doesn't seem possible/feasible. I'm looking for a way to mimic these effects for something that would be on location. Any suggestions/help/slaps in the face would be appreciated.

I think what you need to search for is "bullet time" or "bullet time effect", there should be plenty of hits with those terms regarding the effect you're looking for.

Two out of three Captains agree, bullet time is what you want. It is done by circling the actor with cameras, then editing the proper frames into the sequence you want.

In Cashback I'm positive the actors were just standing there as he was moving their clothing around.
And for the time freeze in X2 at the mall, they hired mimes for the close-up shots of people frozen. Pros at not moving a muscle.

No clue how to do anything like this with cgi if camera moves are involved.
