Freelance call backs

I have dropped off my resume and demo reel to several companies around the area about a week ago.

My question is do I call them back to just check in, just like if it were applying for a full-time job? If so what would you say?

Thanks.

Call them. See them. Channel them. Whatever... just stay connected.

Just say, "Hello _____, This is Zack Attack. I left a demo reel and resume with _____ last week and I wanted to follow up with a phone call to see if you've had a moment to take a look at my demo reel. Also, what do you think about DVXuser removing post counts?". :)

Offer to work for free, or just to hang around on set sometime. What kind of work are you looking for?

Unfortunately free isn't paying the bills right now.

I am in video mainly, I do everything with video, write, shoot, produce, edit, etc.

The area I am in is really small, midwest city on border of Iowa and Illinois. So its hard to get gigs because 1)there isn't any or 2)they only need the people they have on staff

I've also found it good just to keep people aware of me. Even if not contacting them to ask if they've seen my resume, I tend to send emails when I do a new short, or if I am working on something else. It's a good way to:

a) Keep your name in there without sounding desperate.
b) Looking like you are actually up to something besides waiting around for a job.

Yeah, that's key. My 'big break' came when I called up a local pro sports team and asked if they ever needed freelance help in their in-house video department. He gave me a 'Maybe,' I showed up for a crew meeting, worked one game for free, and now I'm on the A-crew. From there I've met lots of other guys a lot like myself who freelance for video, TV, etc. So, we pitch jobs around to each other, and with each job you get an 'in' with a new client. Just kind of snowball's from there.

So, maybe another angle would be for you to find some people who are doing what you want to be doing...then do what they do!
