I just checked out Studio Daily, and I think my head may have exploded. Wow! I'll definitely have to check them out more thoroughly, even though they go way beyond my skill level.
My favorite freebie is DV Magazine. They have some really interesting articles, my favorite column is Stefan Sargent's Production Diary. Everybody has had a bad shoot, right? This guy has been doing production since forever, and shares tales of bad shoots and how he managed to turn them around.
My favorite one takes place at a British steel mill, where his small team is going to shoot an intro piece. He gets there and finds out how the BBC had been there previously, and had trucks full of light to make the inside shoot work. He didn't know it would be so dark, and didn't bring enough equipment. Instead of going back, he finds stacks of cardboard boxes and newspaper. Making a tower out of them, he places his talent, lights the boxes on fire, and roll camera! Worked great!
All are great (and free), but DV and Student Filmmakers are my faves. I usually read them cover to cover and learn lots of useful stuff. I'd agree with the Captain about Sargent's column. DV is largely tech, wheras SF is more broad. It tlaks about pitching, scheduling, directing, etc.
Post is way beyond me, but I keep reading to see if it makes any sense.
