free sound effects

Just wondering what y'all do for sound effects. Ovbviously we're all on a budget, so it's not like I rent a foley stage. And sound effects CDs are pretty absurdly priced if they're of any quality... and invariably will be missing that one sound you need. And the quality of free stuff online is bollocks for the most part.

I use this site some:

They're kinda nicer cause they let you sort by minimum sample rate/resolution, so you can weed out the total garbage. But most of the sounds are just not that usable.

So if anyone else has similar resources, pray tell.

Re: free sound effects

I've been doing a massive amount of my own. I suppose when I get a legitimate field recorder I'm going to be making and archiving even more. (currently using PC with high end firewire audio interface) I'd be interested in finding sources for good materials also. In the mean time, what is it you are specifically looking for, and at what bit rate / sampling frequency? Anything that is particularly hard to find? Maybe I have something you could use?

Hey Collink:

Nothing too specific. I'm just gearing up to tackle the audio end of a short I'm working on. Gun shots, tires squeeling, doors, footsteps, engine noises, etc. etc...

It seems like as many times as people (myself included) have recorded such sounds for our movies, that there would be a plethora of resources on the Web. But most sites that have sfx, just don't cut it.

BTW what firewire audio interface do you have?

H,
I'm using the MOTU 828MkII. I really like the unit, it has very clean sound, excellent preamps, and it can be used as a stand alone mixer without a computer for feeding audio to my DVX or even as a small live sound or recording mixer. I have a plethora of microphones ranging from Neumann (TLM-103) Sennheiser MD431's, ME-66/K6, MKE-800, Shure SM-81's, Beta 57's, AKG D12E etc...Sound, especially foley sound is one of my favorite parts of indie filmmaking. I completely enjoy creating all the subtle nuances of sound that "sell" the image. My absolute favorite moment is when you create a track that is clear, precise, and totally accurate for a given scene, and not a single audio element heard was recorded simultaneously with the video. That kicks ass. The audience will NEVER know, but I will and it's cool.
