Free Pro Tools - for me?

I am getting a sound recorder pretty soon (probably Marantz 670) and I was wondering how the free version of Pro Tools hold up?

I expect to record 2-3 tracks with possibly 1-2 extra tracks when I mix it on the PC.

How does this free version hold up for me? What will I be missing?

There seem to be eight tracks on the free version...

All the best,

It holds up fine for a really old version of PT that is limited to 8 tracks and only runs on Win98 or MacOS9.

Ai ai ai... I just realized that... Windows ME ??? Does that still exist...?? Doesnt that belong in a museum somewhere....

Q. I've just upgraded to Windows XP, Windows NT, or Windows 2000. Will Pro Tools FREE 5.0.1 be compatible?

A. No. Pro Tools FREE for Windows will only run on Windows 98 or Windows Me operating systems. It will not even install on other systems.

Excuse me for adding this useless thread ... I just got really excited when I saw it was available in a free version with eight tracks...

I will think before I thread from now on ... :undecided

I think it may be compatible with ME but still, anything below Windows 2k is a resurrected corpse on any modern machine, pretty much. We can start talking about the better days with Windows 95 and service pack but I'd really rather not. I want to forget those better days, hehe.
So yeah, pretty much anything else will do better. You can even go with Cubase LE for instance, it comes with a lot of audio modern interfaces and at a modest stand alone price. There is also Logic Express.

Thanks mate,

You know I went to the digidesign website shop and I couldnt find any Pro Tools program to buy (just wanted to check the price though) -- they all seem to be hardware dependent... even the LE ...

I will look into your suggestions... Is it possible at all to get the Pro Tools for AVID as a stand alone thingy??

Pro Tools is hardward dependent. No other option. The Mbox is the "entry level" ProTools LE system and it's around $450 depending on reseller.

No, it's not. That's a dependency Digidesign created. You need some sort of gear to get PT. The cheapest from Digi is the Mbox, either 1 or 2. 1 can be found on eBay.

The other way is to buy M-Audio audio units, such as Firewire 410 or even the Audiophile cards (there is a list of supported hardware) and then buy the Pro Tools M-Powered which is a special version which apparently doesn't support a certain set of plug-ins for timecode support within PT. Also, PT M-Powered costs over $300 USD on its own.

Check out the thread on Nuendo vs. Pro Tools, there are some interesting details on PT.

You can find an Original Mbox new for about $250.... it includes the latest ProTools LE. A pretty good deal...
