Free music?

Is there any site on internet where I can download free (no charge) legal music/fx to use in movies? The movies we are talking about is just for my self or my family (no commercial purpose). All I can find is royalty-free music. Thanks!

Google "podsafe music" and you'll get a bunch of stuff intended for use in podcasts. Doublecheck the licenses, but I'd think you could use it.

Also I believe that if you are literally only going to use this for you and your family (no posting on line etc) then I think you can probably use any music you have. I'm a stickler on copyright issues but I do believe that personal (only) use falls under FairUse. FX, you could try Freesound .org.

One of my friends managed to get some of the sound effects used in BBC programmes but I can't remember how he got them...

You can use many of my tracks free of use as long as it's not commercially.

Just provide the proper credits and i'm golden. (of course when you have your 30.5 mill budget film, please consider me for a piece of the pie. :) )

That is really generous Justin! Your music is really good, like it a lot. Have tried to download a few tracks, but all files hosted on hostpaw.com is inaccessible. Dont know if it is temporary or if the site is down?
I understand that You are a musicwriter to the BIG movies? Really cool to be able to use the same moviemusic as Tim Burton and James Cameron :D Even though my work wont bring any bucks in to my pocket...but if/when it does, I will make You a great deal ;)

ahhh Shoooot! I forgot.. one of my free hosting servers went down. I checked all the links and they should be up now. If you run into a problem, just replace the edgen.hostpaw.com/edgen_name_of_track.mp3 with www.edgenmusic.com/edgen_name_of_track.mp3

But ya, there's actually lots of music composers here at DVX user gracious enough to let people use their music. We are just a bunch of squirrels finding some nuts for the winter.

Good luck and sorry for missing linkages.

There is a collection of BBC sound effects on CD: "The BBC Sound Effects Library." Not free.

I've heard some people claim that the BBC sound effects library and its sequel were released into the public domain, but I can't find confirmation or any licensing information on that set. I've seen one of those discs in person at a college, and I don't recall it having any licensing info on it in either direction.

Anyone know for sure on that?

I don't believe this falls under Fair Use at all. This is copying, straight up. Which is prohibited. Just like you can't make copies of your favorite music CD and give them to your family.

Fair Use has very strict guidelines under which someone else's work can be used without their permission. I'm not an expert on Fair Use, but I believe it primarily involves using material for critiquing, for parody/satire, or for educational purposes. Even those uses are narrowly defined.

Or instead of finding music, I can write score your movie for you. For free. I'm looking for projects to score for free just so I have more experience.
