Freak'n Thieves and AMEX

After all precautions have been made, and careful use of my AMEX, I still got pinched. A phone call I recieved this week from someone claiming to be from OFFICE DEPOT, asked me to verify an online order of 150.00 in ink cartridges by giving them my xpiration date of my card. 3 things tipped me off right away that I was being scammed.
1. "Private Call" on my cellphone caller ID
2. "Please verify your expiration date..."
3. I dont order office supplies on line when I can walk 3 blocks to OFFICE DEPOT.

After telling the caller where they can get off at, I called AMEX and cancelled the card (not as bad a hassle as I thougt it would be) and requested a new number.

When I got home, AMEX had emailed me with 2 other instances of fraudulent use of my card. All total about 500.00 attempted to charge my card.

Amex does rule.

I once booked 13 hotel rooms to put up cast and crew for an out of town shoot. We arrived to find only 5 hotel rooms available, even though I had a confirmed reservation for all 13. I had to go elsewhere to house everyone. A few weeks later the hotel charged me for the rooms anyway and refused to refund my money, saying that I should have canceled my reservation 24 hours in advance (before arriving at the hotel to find out my reservation was meaningless).

Anyhoo, a five minute call to AmEx fixed that right up!

It was a Howard Johnson that looked like the Bates Motel when we showed up: [link] I'm rather GLAD they didn't have room for us.

Country Inn & Suites gave us a fantastic deal and was so much nicer. Kept the cast happy as well (FREE COOKIES!)

Oh man. Cookies and Pizza, and AmEx helped you not get scammed. A perfect day!

WaMu just changed all of their debit/credit cards to AmEx.

Now they're gold instead of blue. Nice.

Well, how scary is this... I used to write checks ONLY to pay bills/utilities, but I was at a mall store that had a "No ATM/Debit card" policy. So I wrote a check. About a week later, I find out thru charges to my account that someone had used the ABA/routing number on one of my checks to apply for several online credit cards and had credit extended to the tune of over $25,000!!!! I had to go a special list with all the major credit reporting agencies for a year as an identity theft victim and everything I did had to be voice verified by myself. What a pain!

AND, my own bank would not release copies of the fraudulent "credit applications" to me because of privacy issues!!!!! That is what I was told. Not even with a police report in hand could I get copies of them. I even tried to go to the creditors themselves.

Mean people suck!

:crybaby:

i just got a new frying pan with my AMEX points. :)

JD,

My wife was a victim of identity theft months back. They got her personal information. i.e. SS#, name, address etc. This is a serious problem we are facing in todays world.

Having to deal with months of dialog with various companies to clear our name and credit is quite frustrating but doable. Not to mention feeling "violated" by some scum bag...

A few things we did to deal with this :

1. Obviously we filed a police report locally. (Needed if they were to catch the thief
and you wanted to press charges).
2. Cancelled all current credit cards and had new ones issued.
3. Got free credit reports from all three agencies at:
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
(You can check to see if there are any discrepancies for any other accounts as well.
4. Put passwords on all sensitive accounts: Credit Cards, Bank accounts, etc.

Good luck to you and anyone else.

Mark
