Framerate on 702?

The sound recordist on my film was using the 702. I shot 24pA on the DVX, but he had the framerate on the 702 set to 29.97 ND frames. I really have no clue about this, and he didn't either- I've already been syncing things up in post, and it DOES sync up, although I noticed it was sort of difficult to match up the audio peak with the clap board.

Anyway, should I have recorded 29.97 or 23.976 ON THE 702? I'm editing on a 23.98 timeline in fcp. If I recorded the wrong framerate, what kind of problems am I looking at?

Now... when recording sound digital...there isn't actually any problem. The only thing is that the timcode will be different.

If something is recorder at a speed of 24 fps, and played at a speed of 24 fps...there's no problem (for image).
But if sound would have been recorded on tape (like nagra), there would have been a problem, because the enginge of the nagra has to turn at the same speed as the camera.

I think....

That was the right thing to do.
In essence, 23.98 and 29.97 are the same speed, but 29.97 has a higher accuracy for the clap, meaning- if the clap is between camera frames*, it will not be between audio frames, and can be aligned to that in-between spot. (Not possible in fcp, mind you, but in protools or any audio program)

But for all practical purposes, your audio will be in sync if it is within one frame of the clap.

*Those times when the clap is just a little blurry in one frame so you know it hit before the next frame.

Thanks guys, I figured afterwards that this mostly pertained to timecode (which I'm not using on this).

Sorry this is just so wrong. TC and speed have nothing to do with each other. Sound files are stamped with the start time. There is no continuous sync. The recorder is essentially self resolved. The Only dif having the wrong sample rate is that the numbers at the won't match. 29,97 is NOT "more accurate" than 23.98. It's just a deferent counting system. And no they didn't "do right". They should have been jamed with the camera and running the same TC so that everything would sync by the numbers in post. BUT it doesn't throw off your sync you just need to now hand sync the tracks. This poster is correct that you are all at the same speed so once you get the slate in sync the rest should follow.

Cheers
