Found a topic I want to do a documentary about, but there's at least one documentary

...already on it and a host of other videos on YouTube about it. Admittedly, I was a little bummed when I discovered the doc was on YouTube, so I wonder if it's worth pursuing. It's about a disease, which is often misdiagnosed. It's an interesting subject to me, but I don't want to "beat a dead horse" as the saying goes. Thoughts?

Then do it...? Do you have a different hook or angle you can approach it from?

Plenty of documentaries about animals in the Serengeti or about WW2 - that doesn't seem to stop people from making more. What each new filmmaker brings to the table is whats different....

I'm thinking about that right now. I have a very personal experience with Celiac. I kind of want to angle it toward how it can affect relationships and more the more emotional side of the disease. Something that wasn't really covered. Someone I know was on the brink of suicide because she didn't know what was wrong and no one could diagnose her.

I feel like you've kinda answered your own question.

A mentor of mine once said, w/in the context of unscripted work, "It's not about what they do, it's about who they are." Do a doc about a disease and it'll most likely get lost in the shuffle. Do a doc about your friend's struggles and how those struggles radiated out to friends, family and co-workers and it will have a better chance of resonating w/the audience.
