Fotodiox LED ring light 12v battery options?

If you need more than the AA solution, Bescor makes a wide variety of small bricks and belts. They range from pretty small to door stopper size, so look carefully as there are lots of options. NP1 batteries would be another good option, though probably a bit more expensive.

Thanks, prefer not to go the belt route something I can tape to the rig when need be and batteries can be replaced easy.

I would NOT recommend AA's as 8 in series will produce the 12 volts BUT, watch out for the CURRENT DRAW. The specs do not mention the wattage draw to determine the current from 12 volts. The current may be as high as 2 amps or more from all them leds, and AA's might get mighty hot (or POOF !) mighty quickly. I do not think there is a small form factor 12 volt battery that can safely supply 12 volts at over 2 amps without issues. Try checking out batteryspace site for li-ions 12V with a built in protection circuit. Not cheap and small but have excellent quality. I would really look into the Bescors, especially the small one with charger. They are really not that big. Watch out for proper polarity when hooking up. Mistake on that will blow the unit if it doesn't have reverse polarity protection.

Just noticed that it did specify 352 leds of .06 W each. That equates to 22 watts at the led end of things. Add another 20 % on average for the led driver's 80% efficiency factor loss and you end up with around 26 watt battery drain from the 12 volt input. That translates to 2.2 amps.
AA's are a NoNo.

The 352 Fotodiox can be powered by 14.8vbattery packs as well without blowing the unit, that gives me option as well to DIY. Ryobi power tool batteries worth a look....

If they work out, that's good. Just remember that fully charged batteries have on the average a 15-20% increase in voltage, and the voltage surge/spike on startup is the killer if the led driver upper voltage capability is exceeded. Just watch out for the polarity thing. Where did you notice the 14.8 volt spec. ?

thanks Norman, not sure what all that means. it seem a simple enough device that if you blow the fuse you replace it... i found a post on cheesycam DIY site with a custom battery for the Fotodiox ring light. the guy rigged two 7v. i'm amazed that they make the ring light without selling a battery option. who wants to be tethered to a cord shooting in a studio?
Going to wander around my local hardware store to figure it out as i need it for a beauty shoot in a few days.
