Fostex FR-2: Digital out to S/PDIF?

Sorry for the cross-post, but I want to figure this out before my next shoot on Tuesday...

I'm considering adding a MicroTrak II as a backup "bit box" for my FR-2, and am going to need to go from the 3-pin XLR Digital Out on the FR-2 to the RCA plug S/PDIF in... Can I use a cable like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/353774-REG? Or- will I need an adapter to handle the conversion to S/PDIF?

Yes, I think that will do fine.

Though please bare in mind that the MicroTrack will *not* be a full back-up for the FR-2; because if there is a fault in the FR-2 and it stops sending digits out, there will be no back-up.

All that it will really do, is if there is a power failure on the FR-2 and it does not write the TOC, you will still have the recording on the MicroTrack (as long as it is on batteries and they were fully charged before the session so that *does* write the TOC.

Do you have a mixer you use in front of the FR-2? I would suggest taking a feed from that because if that FR-2 goes out as mentioned above you will not be recording to that recorder. I'm pretty sure you have it figured out by now. Good luck John!

John - Thanks for the info. I'm not so concerned about the FR-2's power failure- I've put together a good power kit for both bag & cart work... I'm mostly concerned about file errors on the CF card. I've had it happen only twice and I think it's the card. The backup would ensure that the signal from the Wendt X3 is being sent to 2 recorders.

Nicole - I use the Wendt X3, so I'm going to output to both recorders.

A backup recorder is always a good idea, but if you think there's a card problem, fix it! 8gig CF cards are under 30 bucks.

Jordan - Yeah, I have a Sandisk Extreme III 8GB in the CFC slot & 1 SanDisk Ultra II 4GB in a PCMCIA adapter in the PCM slot... I'm finding that I don't think I trust the 2 Transcend 133X 16GB's that I was using any longer- I'm going to stick with the SanDisk cards for now.

The info on the Fostex site is rather outdated regarding which cards are confirmed... The largest on the list are the 8GB cards.

SanDisk is definitely the best to use for audio.

But make sure you buy from a known and reputable source as there are plenty of low quality fakes around.
