??? What computer are you on. I'm assuming PC since I have never heard of a Mac having an issue with 24 bit files. I suspect that it's not the bit depth but the file format that is causing you issues. Also what recorder?
Your post is a little like..." My car stopped, it's a Toyota. What's wrong?".
Details might get you answers.

Sorry, a little clearer this time :)

Im using the Fostex FR2-LE. When I record at 24 bit and try to play it back on my Dell PC, there is no playback. A window pops up and tells me that my system is missing something called Codec 1.

When I record in 16 Bit mode, the audio plays back fine.

Im using the recorder to capture sound for a feature i am putting together. mostly sound FX type stuff. Is 16 bit acceptable for film

Depends on what you're trying to use to play back the audio. Windows Media Player (as far as I know) does not play 24-bit audio (there may be a codec for it, but I've never found it). Have you tried playing the same files back in your NLE? Or, even try downloading Audacity (open source audio program that is well thought of) and see if it will play the files.
