Hi guys,

I am a DSLR shooter and I've been recording sound with a zoom H4n. So far it really came handy and did the job with few cons. ...

That said, sound is very important to me and I would like to upgrade to the next level. I will be recording DSLR interviews, but also podcast with the device. And I am thinking of the fostex DC-R302

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/846034-REG/Fostex_DC_R302_DC_R302_3_Channel_Audio_Mixer.html

Now, how does this device compare with a Sound Device 702 for example? I assume that the 702 is a higher level, but would it blow away the fostex 302?

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Ced

Yikes!,..... just posted a lengthy response , but it didn't show up.

Short answer, price wise the Fostex DC-r302 is a great machine for about $1000, how much is a Sound Device 702 these days?

I've had mine here in Canada for about 6 months, very pleased with it.

I'll try a more detailed response later, .....off to work now.

Hope this reply shows up.

I used the fostex DC-R302 and do not find it reliable.
The first bug was a few months ago. I came back from a long day in the field and with great surprise I realized that the recorder had recorded anything. All files were lost for no reason! After contacting the dealer all the recorders were removed to correct the bug.
But after this bug here's another one! If you delete a file the recorder will start overwriting always the last file you recorded. Not really a good thing, right? You simply remove one file to have a crisis in the automatic counting of scenes. For me Fostex DC-R302 it is not suitable for broadcast!
Strange that the recorder has not been tested before being sold! We just have to hope it's the last bug.

In short. It sounds GREAT. Its compact, has 3 xlr inputs, has outputs to your dslr, etc. But it wasn't reliable at first. it looks like they have fixed that with new firmware updates though, however I am still wary to use it on high end shoots.

When I remove the SD card from the Fostex DC-R302 to copy material to the PC and then return
the card back to the DC-R302 show me in the display "Card Error." And all the material
disappears from SD card. Then I remove the card from the DC-R302 and put in the PC, the material
is there. When try to format the card in the DC-R302 he was so confused that I can not turn it off
but I have to remove battery to make it turn off. Please help me, what to do!
I can not return the device to the store because it was taken in England and I live in Serbia, and I
like Device and want to use it.

First make sure your firmware is up to date.

Sometimes computer operating systems write files to a sd card and that may be whats happening to you. Best to get a program that does a byte to byte check to see that what you put in the computer is what comes out. There are many programs that do this. There may be some that are free. You'll have to search for yourself. Heres a paid one alot of people use to offload video and audio files that has a byte to byte check, theres mac and pc versions:

When you remove the memory card from the recorder, flip the write protect tab to the locked position so your PC won't be able to write any files to the card or modify it in any other way. Don't forget to switch it back to write enabled before you put it in the recorder again. I don't have the Fostex, but this is a good practice with any device that uses flash cards.
