Hi,
A few months ago I contacted someone that writes a web-comic that I read for permission to adapt one of his story lines into a short script (which I am directing). I'm wonering what form(s) I should send him to sign, scan, and email back to me so that I can submit a completed film to festivals.

Thanks.

You can option/purchase the right to adapt it into a movie and purchase one of those movie books that comes with a bunch of forms on a CD or, You can make your own form. It can be a very simple document. All you need to to is outline the terms, price, what you are specifically adapting and any other terms or permissions you may need. There is no 'one' form you need because every situation for getting the rights to a story, comic, ect are always different.

Essentially, you need to 'purchase exclusive/non-exclusive motion picture rights' for that specific episode of the comic strip. For reference, you may want to google and look for some 'Book Option Agreements' 'Screenplay Option/Purchase Agreements'.

Hope this helps...
