Formatt Matte Box Filters

This may be an obvious one, but does the Formatt 500 matte box only accept Formatt brand 4x4 filters? Or can I use any 4x4 filter (ie. tiffen, schneider, etc.). And also, is there anything in particular a new user of the Formatte should know about it?

Thanks!

Re: Formatt Matte Box Filters

Any 4x4 will work. One doesn't need to know anything except how to use the filters.

Re: Formatt Matte Box Filters

Thanks, that's good to know.

Also, are there certain brands that tend to be better than others? I'm looking to get a good polarizer, a graduate ND, a black diffusion and maybe an 85B (I read that it helps cut out noisey blue channel outdoors).
Does anyone have any thoughts on filter brands as well as key filters to have?

BTW This community is by far one of the most helpful, open resources I've ever come across online. Thanks to all!

The formatte 500 will take a 4x5 and possibly a 4x6. But you can only use them vertically because they will simply extend above the 4x4 holder.

Keep in mind, however that if using a DVX100a, you'll find that the handle-mic gets in the way of the filter-holder if you don't have a uv filter ring on your lens (it pushes the matte box out that extra little bit that you need to be able to access the holder from above). Kind of annoying.

Yes there are subtle differences between filter mfgs. Think in terms of the optic quality of the Leica lens on your DVX. You want filters of equal optic quality. I suggest you do a search or just page through the old posts in this [hardware] forum area for opinions.
