Format for submission

I've been looking around and haven't been able to find clues about how to submit my clip, in terms of format. I remember we had a brief discussion on this, but I thought it might be good for it to be in its own thread.

I shot it 4:3, but composed shots so that they would end up being 16:9 on the DVD. So my question is, do I want to crop the top and bottom 5% of my film (is there a more correct percentage?), change the aspect ratio to 16:9, and export it? That way, there will be no letter bars, but it will have the correct aspect ratio bit set, yes?

I don't want to put bars on it, then have Jarred mangle the video to be the correct size before setting the aspect ratio...

Any tips are appreciated. I am using premiere pro 1.5 for my NLE.
 
The best option would be for you to submit a 16:9 letterboxed version of your 4:3 video. However, we'll take *any* format and crop/stretch as necessary for the DVD.

This looked like a better thread to post under, although the discussion was beginning in the compilation of rules thread ....

I'm wanting to render my file to the most easily viewed player. In my experience, EVERYONE has quicktime (PC & Mac), but not everyone has Windows Media Player (many Mac users I know don't have it).

So, I guess I'm answering my own question as to which format is most easily viewed, but when I render to Quicktime 6 it NEVER looks as good & clean as Windows Media Player 9.

PLEASE, everyone tell me they can watch Windows Media Player 9!!! :thumbsup:
 
I'm a Mac user and can view WMVs, but it's always buggy, stopping to "rebuffer" every 10 damn seconds (even on a very fast connection).

What compression are you using in QT? I use Sorenson 3 pro, which has never let me down yet - both in image quality and file size.
 
It defaults to Sorenson Video 3, but says nothing about Pro. It's the one I use when rendering to Quicktime 6. I'm not sure how my quicktime files look on Mac's (hopefully better), but I know they're not the best on PC.
 
You should be able to adjust Sorenson's bitrate and keyframes. For a 5-minute piece, I'd select a bitrate between 1000-1500 kbits/sec with a keyframe every 12 frames. (note that I said kbits - earlier versions of Sorenson may list the rate in kbytes)
