Force render

Hello,

I have some clips in my project in different codecs, like .mov png codec. Final Cut X plays it, but with stutters. I know I can transcode the clip but I'd like to render it direct in timeline to get a smooth playback.
Is it possible ? I can't find an option to render it and since it is a single mov file in storyline FCPX isn't rendering it.

Thanks,
Ulisses

Do you have render lines at the top by the timecode ruler?

In the Modify menu, very bottom. Keyboard shortcuts are Control-Shift-R to render the whole timeline, Control-R to render only what's highlighted in the timeline.

No render lines, FCPX guess that the footage can be played in real time, but playback is poor.
So I transcoded to PRORES. But in FCP7 I had an option to render even unlimited footage (more render options)

Thanks,
Ulisses

Actually, no, FCP 7, renders applied the exact same way. Just in FCP X we have much better playback with them, and we can have them render much faster. What is the codec of the assets you are editing, and what specifically are your hardware specs?

I'm using PRORES 422 and MOV PNG codec for animations done in PC. Playback most of the time is fine, but sometimes I get some stutters.
Running in a MAC PRO 2011, 8 cores, 20gb RAM.
After running FCPX all day long, general performance comes worst and in activity monitor I can see FCPX using more than 6gb of RAM at idle. After a system reboot memory in use goes down for 2gb and project navigation / playback is good again.
I think FCPX has serious memory management issues. Projects feels heavy with all the fancy thumbnails, UI animations, etc. I'm saying that because I'm editing a 10 minutes video with 5 layers in HD, masks, chroma-keys, etc and performance is down often.

Thanks,
Ulisses

What graphics card are you running, and how many monitors are plugged in to it?
Be sure your Projects and Events are not on your system drive, and not on an external drive.
Be sure you're on FCP X 10.0.3 and Lion 10.7.3.
I'm on a MP and not seeing this performance problem, but you could try setting in the Preferences for Better Performance rather than Higher Quality, see if that helps.
Yes, FCP X loads those databases for the Events and Projects you touch into RAM, and they take up room. 6GB RAM is not really an issue, that's why we get lots of RAM.

ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB GDDR5
I have 2 monitors, but the second one is a LCD TV that I keep it off most of the time.
I'm not running Lion...

Thanks,
Ulisses

Be aware that a second display cut your GPU resources in half. Apps will only access what the card allocates to the primary monitor. If you have a second one plugged in, it can be turned off, but if the power cord is still on, it may still be detected and allocated. So you're on a Mac Pro and all your Events and Projects are on a secondary internal drive, right?

I'm on a similar system, but running Lion, no real performance issues at all.

Yes, secondary internal drive. Talking about the drive, I think it is not fast enough for some layers with alpha, effects, etc...
Maybe a RAID 0 would help.

Thanks !
Ulisses

Internal SATA, you won't get any better performance, honestly. RAID 0 is a waste of time. If you're going RAID, at least do level 1 for small setups, level 5 for larger setups. But for what you're doing, an internal SATA is about it. Look at other issues in the system. Perhaps do some of that heavy compositing and effects in Motion.
