Anyone have any good suggestions for a part time job to supplement my freelance income?

Last year was my first year and I made it through with out a part time job but it was a rough year and I have a higher credit card balance because of it. I don't want to have to say I have any other kind of a job except production work but it seems like the smart thing to do while I'm climbing the ladder to get to the higher day rates and more legit camera work.

My main issues currently are that I can't have something with set hours or a regular schedule. For example Starbucks, a bookstore, etc. A professor a couple years ago suggested substitute teaching because they keep calling if you turn it down and they call at the last minute. I don't know about me in a room full of kids though :/
I wouldn't mind working late shifts after production jobs. I've noticed that most of the time I'm done working at 8 or 9pm. So I've considered trying out 'barbacking.'

What do you guys think? Does anyone hear have a good part time job currently?

I don't have a second job currently, but am thinking about it as well. With the dire economy this year and my primary income from event videography, I kinda feel like making as much extra cash until the wedding season kicks in during the summer is not a bad idea.

I would guess it depends on what type of production work you do and what the best hours are for you to work a second job around are. For me I need to keep Friday and especially Saturday open, so I'd rather work during the week. I also don't want something that is so stressful and time consuming that it almost becomes a career and takes away from my film and video production time.

I don't know about bartending. Unless you have previous experience with it don't you need a license for it as well?

Yea apparently where I am you need an ABC license which is 60 bucks. As far as bar backing it's not quite the same as bar tending.

I wish there was something that was 10 plus dollars an hour that you could literally do whenever you needed the extra money.

Something you enjoy!

Web design? Document editing? Handyman? Those are some of my interests...but I'm sure you have others?

I'm with you on that one.

I've been tempted to go back to pizza delivery just because it is so easy. Thing is I don't like the fact that it adds a good deal of extra wear and tear onto my car. Plus, with the currently crappy economy I doubt the tips would be very good. It also makes the interior of your car smell just not good... not good at all.

I pick up odd jobs from Craigslist mostly, doing freelance Graphics and web design, on a very part time schedule. Most of the time I bounce off the walls waiting, part of the time I actually get some work :) I also pick up the occasional job as a second camera, or doing some small editing lobs, just nothing to get excited about.

Hmm...those are good ideas.

It's funny I use to deliver pizzas the first couple years in college. I would consider doing it some too if the place I worked was closer to me. Part of me doesn't want to take that big of a step back though.

I wish I could do some editing but I have trouble telling someone that I'm going to edit something for them on my MacPro with no decks or bells and whistles.

The main thing I hear freelancers doing usually seems to involve bars.

If I were you I wouldn't be bummed out on having a top-of-the-line computer. I've seen a bunch of pro outfits working with less. Maybe what you can do is hook up with a camera operator, and be their editor. Or assistant editor. Whatever, you don't need to have all the gear to make it happen :)
