For HPX170: Vinten Pro 5 or Vinten Vision 3

dude!
$1000-2000!! for tripod!?!?

haha dangg i want a hpx170 super bad but i might get a 7d first.

why would someone need such and expensive tripod for a hpx170 i mean 400-700 but 1000-2000?!!

You get what you pay for, and the more you pay the better quality pans and tilts and general support you typically get. When you try to make a smooth pan with a smooth stop on a cheap tripod you'll immediately regret not spending more.

A tripod will stay with you for several cameras - you need to think of it as an investment for the long term. Pay $1,000+ now, don't spend money on a tripod for the next 10 years. That's $100 a year - pretty cheap, if you look at it that way.

Good decision! Let's see what the Vinten Vision 3 does for you. I went the eBay route and found a slightly used Manfrotto fluid head and sticks for around $800 shipped - it retails for $1450 brand new.

Should arrive sometime next week, I can't wait! I had originally sold my 501HDV head w/ sticks due to it not being the greatest with a DVX/HVX, etc and when I switched over to a DSLR, I thought I could get away with a 701HDV head and 055 sticks. Boy, was I wrong.

I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice and ended up scouring for a good deal before I happened upon the one I finally found.

Gotta spend a little more and only pay for quality once,

It handles the weight and many people are fine with it, but once you use a real fluid head (the 501 isn't considered a "true" fluid head), it's hard to go back to more jerky pans and less fluid movements.

Hm, that is a valid point - you do have to consider mobility when you're moving around and shooting as much.

Those sticks do look pretty good, but that is quite a pricey kit and it is still rather heavy - almost 10lbs. In that case, I'd probably do something like this:

You get a little nicer head, what some consider a "true" fluid head, sticks with a spreader and a half bowl (so you can level the head without adjusting the legs) and a bag to carry it for around $650.

In terms of quick setup however, the sticks that you link do look fairly quick to setup. I would add this to your purchase:

to make leveling the head much easier. Having to play around with the sticks to get a level is a royal pain in the ass.
