for all the quicktime junkies

ok here's the deal...
I have vegas 5.
I also have quicktime 7 pro.
I really love how Q7 has mad compression skills, all my files are down about 1/5 the size they were before.
BUT!
My videos crash in almost all browers!!
WTF?!
so i'm wondering if my process is all wrong.
I usually render my project as an uncompressed mov file (highest quality settings)
then, I open the movie with Q7 and choose the "export" option to compress it.
the file size rocks, but often the movies just won't work in firefox, IE, netscape...
people can still download the mov files and they work just fine.
so where am i going wrong?:undecided

one other thing...
I noticed in vegas when i choose render, it gives lots of options- and the only option for quicktime is Q6.
so where's Q7?
I also see if I choose Q6 it gives me the option to use H.264 compression, but it always gets an error if I try to use it.
very frustrating.:embarasse
any ideas how to get vegas 5 to support H.264??

(ps, I have all the latest updates and all...still won't work)

I have Vegas 6 AND QT7 Pro ... still can't get it to render with that H.264 (render fails on me too). I'm forced to render out to an AVI, then import into QT7 Pro to get my QT7 files from there.

yeah same thing here man...except i usually render out to uncompressed quicktime...maybe i should try doing an avi first then go Qt7 from there, like you do.

i'm basically just trying to solve this problem of all the web browsers always crashing whenever i click the link to view the movie.

Same problem here. My question is, on the apple website it says that you can encode to 5.1 surround sound with teh H.264 codec, however, there is no option for it in vegas (can't get it to render anyways) and there is no way to export another quicktime format with a 5.1 audio track. Any ideas?

Quicktime sucks. Period. It's buggy, isn't guaranteed to playback on all systems (even those that have Quicktime!), uses terribly unprofessional nag screens, and worse of all, won't play back AT ALL if there's the tiniest error during download.

You can get an H.264 codec for AVI which works much better (though it's still a bit buggy.)

i've been having similar problems. h264 just dont work out of vegas. I was curious if there was some kind of updater or something...

I know when you go out from FCP to QT7 via compressor on a Mac you can optimize for download or streaming.

I do most of my online .mov's for download, if you click them to play in a browser you get a quicktime logo in a new window and it just stares at you blankly forerver but no movie will everplay.

So maybe look for an optimized for streaming vs. download controal when you are converting to h.264.

jdstan- yes i noticed this too, and the "download" setting seem to work. I've been successful in my last two renders/ they streamed flawlessly.

cool

it does seem like there are many compatiblilty issues though

I provide a link on mywebsite to download the QT7 platforms for both windows and Mac and I still get complaints all the time from people that my movie wont play -- although no one here had trouble during Zombie fest -- which leads me to think that QT7 or H.264 is not super compatible with either older OSes or hardware or both.
