Footage review DVD

I'm putting together a promotional DVD for a horse feed company. Along the way of gathering footage for that project, I shot a testimonial at a client of the horse feed company who was interested in seeing the footage from that day.

I'm wondering, in this situation, do I simply throw together a playable dvd with different chapters of every unedited shot (obviously only the shots I deem good enough to give the client) and then mention if she would like a polished product made from the footage to contact me? Or, should I just provide a data dvd of quicktime files? I know personally as an editor, i'd prefer the data DVD, but I wonder what the standard is. Seeing as how she has no editing skills i'd think shed prefer a playable DVD, which also ensures any work she would want done with the footage would be given to me, whereas if I give her the raw data, another local editor could throw something together for her.

Is there an official name for handing over the footage to a client/potential client? Is it just like I said, a "footage review DVD?"

Thanks for any insight.

IMHO, you must rely a bit on your intuition. If you think that spending time on putting some work together for this client will be valuable to you (or if you have lots of free time), then you should by all means call the client and casually ask what she would prefer, and what her reasons for the request are. If you think you might get some extra work out of it, or some good referrals, then it's worth the time to cultivate your relationship with this client. Otherwise just send her what's easiest for you. This type of business is almost all about relationships, and almost nothing about the product.

BTW, the film industry term for the footage you describe is/are "the dailies", but you can call it whatever you want.

Thanks for the advice. I figured giving her a DVD labeled "dailies" would come off as pretentious, but that's exactly what it is. Funny how naming the materials even becomes an issue depending on the type of client you're dealing with.

I wound up following my intuition and going a little out of the way for her (not that I really had the time) but thought it might lead to a paying job. It seems like it's paid off as shes inquired about products I offer.

You're entirely right about this industry being about relationships 1st.
