Footage renders darker than in Premiere

Hi

I've spent many hours laboring over the cc and grading on a project only to render it out and look nothing like it did in Premiere Pro. Needless to say I was horribly disappointed and disheartened as I suspect everyone has spent hours tweaking, experimenting and laboring over sliders to achieve a certain look and understand the how much pride goes into it.

I've rendered out in a number of formats including APR and tried viewing the clip in a number of apps, from iTunes to (the very ugly) Quicktime, it still ends up looking dirty and muddy instead of crisp and glossy (even as APR). What can I do?

Is there a trick to getting the same in a vid as to whats in Premiere. Its soooooo dis heartening!!!

Is this a characteristic of Premiere Pro? I didn't remember this being a major issue with FCP.

Quicktime, especially when viewing HD material, has several color decoding bugs that will not allow you to see your image properly. This also happens in Premiere Pro, and Avid, etc. Through my experience here is what I've found:

1) Quicktime will never accurately read the color/gamma values of HD quicktime of .mp4 movies. For the best accurate results I found that encoding in H264 (.mp4) files in Adobe Media Encoder at 720x405 keeps proper values. But rendering in any higher resolution will cause a color/gamma shift.

2) Try viewing your movie in VLC player, which often is better at reading color/gamma values and it will give a better indication. Chances are that your file actually contains the proper values, but your media player (ie. quicktime) is not reading them properly.

3) Try importing your rendered-out file back into Ppro and check the values. Very often the editing program will interpret everything properly. If this is the case you'll just have to live with the fact that viewing your files in quicktime will look different, even though you know the values are fine.

Thanks for the truth :) - I was hoping there would be a magical lie to make me feel better... All of a sudden I have more appreciation for peoples work on vimeo!
