Footage out of sync

I'm using FCP to convert a bunch of old VHS tapes into data. I haven't experienced any issues until I started importing long clips. When I play them back, the audio is heavily out of sync. I also notice that the video will freeze for several frames, with the audio playing fine. I've played back the captured clips with Quicktime, and there are no issues at all. So for some reason, FCP isn't playing back the clips properly. The footage is NTSC 720X480 29.97fps 48.0KHz

Any ideas?

Seems the clip length doesn't matter. I tried capturing shorter clips and the same thing happened. I also tried using compressor first, then imported the clips. The footage wasn't out of sync, but the video would freeze for several frames here and there.

I had something very similar in Premiere when a VHS tape has some control track issues, and the control track had gaps in the data - the import window in premiere reported dropped frames, yet the import appeared to be there - and as the small picture glitches were in inimportant parts, I though I could just chop them out, but I got the same audio sync problem - which I cured by slipping it in time. maybe this is a similar problem?

I dunno. It's just weird because the actual Quicktime file is fine. It's just FCP that seems to have a playback issue. If I export through FCP, the exported file ends up screwed as well.
