Footage on TV looks bad...

Hi.

After shooting a project on a HVX200 and rendering it out making sure it looked good on the computer, I watched it on a TV and it looked too bright and too saturated, not very good.

I tried doing the broadcast safe filters and lowering the saturation, but it still doesn't look as good on the TV as it does on the computer screen. I have been reading around and I read that the computer screen uses RGB and the TV uses YUV.

Do you think I am rendering the video the wrong way? Do I need to switch something to YUV?

Thanks.

A lot of consumer CRTs are designed to be as bright as possible (although many computer monitors are too)... which can make your image look too bright.

Some TVs also crank the chroma because it makes the image stand out from other TVs in the store. You can try feeding some other material through your TV to see if it's just your TV.

2- You should try calibrating your monitors as best as possible. Some monitors can't be calibrated that well (lack of controls + wacky color decoding) but you can make monitors reasonably decent. Calibration also can't get rid of inherent flaws in the display.

For computer CRTs, move the picture far left/right/up/or down. Bump brightness all the way- the blacks in the non-picture area should look white-ish. Lower brightness until the blacks just look black. Adjust contrast to taste- usually about 70% is good unless your monitor is really old.

For TV calibration, try

The blue gel trick may not work very well at all though (some consumer TVs intentionally have wacky color decoding to compensate for certain problems).

3- RGB versus "YUV" should not be the issue here.
