Footage is too dark.

I'm trying to brighten up some footage that was shot too dark. I've seen some people express that using the brightness/contrast filter is no good. I've also noticed that when i use the color correction, it also introduces a ton of grain.

So what is the best way to boost up some exposure in FCP?

What is it shot on?

If the footage is underexposed, grain will be there from start. Using the CC wil only make it visible...

I've had some luck (on really bad footy, that is ) with the following workflow.

CC (watch them scopes)
Add some gausian blur (or channel blur or...)
Add contrast (I like Joe's filters, sampled colours)

You'll maybe have to turn down the whites afterwards to keep the image legal.
Also look after your staturation levels.

OK
This is for messed up images that clients demand to be used.
But it might help you, too -;)

After you've tried the previously mentioned suggestions don't forget to beat the camera op. It won't make the footage any brighter, but it will make you feel better and possibly prevent this from happening again. ;)
